I've recently obtained a Demo of Left for Dead 2 from Steam and I was unable to
start the game.

I tried launching in wine window constrained to 1024x768 resolution.  I had
IE6, d3dx9, corefonts, vcrun2005, and vcrun2008 installed by winetricks.  My
system is an Ubuntu 9.04 OS with the latest Nvidia drivers (v 180) and a
GeForce 8600M GT graphics card.

I did do a search, but after wasting a half hour of my life searching this site
and google for any bugs listed related left for dead 2 demo I gave up and filed
my own.

I'm not sure where you were searching, but next time use the bugzilla search
field.  'Left 4 Dead' would have returned a dozen results with the parent bug
included.
