--- Comment #8 from Difool mouettedebeton@gmail.com 2008-08-16 03:22:20 --- Do you have a small diablo symbol icon in the upper-left corner of your in-game screen ? If yes, you can double-click it, and the game will resume itself.
I didn't notice this trick anywhere else, so maybe it can help here.

--- Comment #9 from Ivan N. Zlatev contact@i-nz.net 2008-08-16 04:53:44 --- Another workaround is to run winecfg and in "Graphics" give WINE full control over window management functions by unticking all "Allow the window manager to...".

--- Comment #10 from Julian Lam julian.lam@gmail.com 2009-02-01 12:18:19 --- Yes, Ivan's workaround works properly. This is not a bug, as it is a programmed feature of the game. Within windows, the game minimizes itself, and resumes upon restoration. However, this is not the case on Linux.
Pressing Alt-enter or allowing WINE control over the window manager will "fix" this problem.

Tick "[x] Emulate a virtual desktop" in 'winecfg's [Graphics] tab. This way Diablo II never really looses it's focus and therefore won't crash.
(I'm still mentioning this for people who haven't upgraded to the newest version, yet)

(With a virtual desktop) I had D2+LOD+1.13d patch running, paused it, came back to it a while later and ran winecfg. After deciding not to change anything in winecfg, I exited it, but D2 would not maximize/pop back up to the virtual desktop. It was hung. I confirmed this by looking at it in my system monitor and Game.exe was stuck on 35% of one of my two CPU cores.
