Summary: Grim Fandango: unable to install Product: Wine Version: 1.1.20 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: t0p0linik@yahoo.it
Created an attachment (id=20730) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=20730) Small error window during installation
I just can't install the game at all! I wanted to know how far 1.1.20 is toward to make the game easily enjoyable and it can't be installed. Why? Furthermore, the error window I get is empty. I attach a screenshot. The "STOP" little window appears a couple of times during installation, then everything reaches the end and the install directory contains only two files: DeIsL1.isu (uninstaller data file?) and Grim.EXE So, the game is unusable.

--- Comment #2 from Andrew Charles Hurst a.hurst@shef.ac.uk 2009-04-26 13:35:26 --- Hi mate, it works for me (GF maintainer in AppDB), using the latest git version (wine --version = wine-1.1.20) Have you tried starting with a fresh prefix or deleting ~/.wine ?

Terminal output?
Nothing noticeable: the messages I get are:
fixme:mixer:ALSA_MixerInit No master control found on MPU-401 UART, disabling mixer fixme:shell:DllCanUnloadNow stub fixme:shell:DllCanUnloadNow stub fixme:shell:DllCanUnloadNow stub fixme:shell:DllCanUnloadNow stub fixme:shell:DllCanUnloadNow stub fixme:shell:DllCanUnloadNow stub fixme:shell:DllCanUnloadNow stub fixme:shell:DllCanUnloadNow stub fixme:shell:DllCanUnloadNow stub fixme:shell:DllCanUnloadNow stub fixme:mixer:ALSA_MixerInit No master control found on MPU-401 UART, disabling mixer
but, please note, the 'fixme' messages appear after the install "completes".
About wine, of course i used latest version 1.1.20 for my ubuntu 8.04.2 and I removed the old .wine directory before the install.

--- Comment #4 from Andrew Charles Hurst a.hurst@shef.ac.uk 2009-04-27 07:04:29 --- Is the directory you're installing to included in a path defined in ~/.wine/dosdevices?
Is the game an Italian language version? CD damaged?

Is the directory you're installing to included in a path defined in
~/.wine/dosdevices? ??? Not sure I understand... I'm installing to ~/.wine/drive_c/Programmi/GrimFandango and last time I tried the installation (a couple of months ago) all went ok.
Is the game an Italian language version?
Yes.
CD damaged?
No.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18223
--- Comment #6 from Andrew Charles Hurst a.hurst@shef.ac.uk 2009-04-27 14:52:50 --- That's fine: drive_c is the default path, you'll find it defined as a disk drive using a symlink ~/.wine/dosdevices/c: -> ../drive_c or similar. Just checking it was in a path windows programs can 'see' through wine.
I'm guessing this is a language problem since the english version works ok. It's a regression (put that into the bug keywords above).
Can you do a regression test using GIT? If not, can you test previous wine versions available through synaptic?
Finally, perhaps you could host a .iso image of the Italian CD somewhere so that others may do the regression test?

I did. Gone back to wine-1.1.7, still none works for this installer. I will try even older releases in the next days.

--- Comment #10 from drachu@gmail.com 2009-07-11 12:52:35 --- Ive tested instalation process with current wine version (1.1.25) and it works well, however it is english version which seems to be unaffected by this regresion.

--- Comment #11 from drachu@gmail.com 2009-07-11 16:15:23 --- Hi,
Another update. This error happened for me on English version after six successful instalations. My guess is, it's connected with condition of a disc with game or cd-rom device itself. Because on eight attempt grim fandango once again installed correctly.
Guess there is only one (and quite easy) way to check, topolink need to rip this two cd's on his hdd and try install game from there.

--- Comment #12 from topolinik t0p0linik@yahoo.it 2009-08-08 06:21:32 --- Done. Sorry, the result is still the same, the game won't install as before. I'm with wine-1.1.26 and the little window (see `Small error window during installation') keeps appearing many times during SETUP.EXE. Then, my install dir only contains four unuseful files and that's all. I did several trials and every time I remove the .wine directory previusly created before the new attempt. Nothing changed. Don't know what to do.

--- Comment #13 from topolinik t0p0linik@yahoo.it 2009-08-08 09:45:25 --- Updated to wine-1.1.27: news! I caught a different behaviour for the installer in two cases (of course, I always install in a fresh new wine directory). First case: launch the installer, always click NEXT, change the install dir from C:\PROGRAMMI\LUCASARTS\GRIM to C:\PROGRAMMI\whatever_I_like, then I get the small error window during the copy and the installer copies just 4 files. Second case: launch the installer, always click NEXT, DON'T change the install dir, then the small window DOESN'T appear and the install process copies 17 files (full install on a windows box results in 35 files installed).
Is this good? Is it getting better? :-D

--- Comment #14 from topolinik t0p0linik@yahoo.it 2009-08-08 09:58:38 --- A new update about wine-1.1.27! Well, now I'm testing the installer using my real, ancient wine directory. Lots of software were installed and removed in the last years, so it isn't a `clean' directory. Before the test, I removed every reference to the game I know of. The directory was deleted, the registry was cleaned in every key/string containing `lucas' (each key contains "LucasArts Entertainment Company...") then I ran the test. I launch the installer, click NEXT a couple of times, I DO CHANGE the destination directory from C:\PROGRAMMI\LUCASARTS\GRIM to C:\PROGRAMMI\whatever_I_like and the install goes ok. 35 files are copied as I wanted. Now, can someone explain me this?

--- Comment #15 from drachu@gmail.com 2009-08-10 05:01:45 --- As I have written before mate. I think you should rip your both cd's on your hard-drive, then mount it and then try to install from there. We need to make sure that this error is not related to your optical drive or condition of a disc.
What could be a case and you just got lucky after 30 attempts to install this game.

Ok, my fault, I forgot to mention it. All these tests were done via ISO disc images.
