Summary: Cakewalk SONAR 4 crashes on start Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: msvcrt AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: himynameiszachandiamapirate@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=22328) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=22328) error without mfc42u
I was previously able to get Cakewalk SONAR running on my system (this was a while ago... my last appdb entry indicates I had been using wine 1.1.5 at the time, and hardy heron as an OS). This was probably done with a few added dll files, but the guide I used to get this program working was lost at whatever point the sonar 2 entry was deleted (the walkthrough here enabled the use of at LEAST versions 2-4). Recently I planned to reinstall this prgram, as I have yet to find anything quite as easy to use in terms of midi composition. However, I am completely unable to get the program to run (I only have sonar 4 now, my older copies have disappeared). I'm fairly certain that missing/not fully-fleshed-out dlls may be the culprit, so I'm filing this bug to see if anything can be done about this.
Upon running in terminal, I get a few errors (attached), one of the more important seeming to be a complaint of not finding MFC42u.DLL. I took a copy of this dll from my old windows install and dropped it in my sonar folder, which gets me a bit farther. Instead of silently crashing, I get an error window popup that says "unknown error in sequencer dll", accompanied by more output in the terminal (also attached). These new complaints seem to center around an msvcrt function, which may also be suspect. I haven't been able to get any farther than this.
I'm not in any way an expert or a coder, so I'm not sure if anything can be done. I am curious as to what any devs might have to say about these errors, however. If there is any way I can make progress on this, I'd like to. If more information is needed, I'd be glad to help out (though I'll probably need to be walked through the process). Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Try to install it with 'winetricks mfc42'.

error with mfc42u
This IDs belong to Cakewalk itself I think (didn't find them on native registry).
How did you install it? Maybe you just moved installed directory, if so clean .wine and try installer.

wine '/home/zach/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/Cakewalk/SONAR 4 Producer Edition/SONARPDR.EXE'
as per the FAQ, cd to the install directory first then run the application. There is nothing to suggest the bug is in msvcrt, unsetting component.

--- Comment #4 from himynameiszachandiamapirate@gmail.com 2009-07-11 23:27:21 --- My apologies, I did run the program incorrectly. cd-ing and running produces the same output, however. Also sorry for jumping the gun on setting a component, I'd never filed a bug here and thought I was supposed to set something there. Now I know, at least.
In addition, I did use the normal installer, though I wish I had a pre-installed version I could test against this (I no longer have a windows build, or I would do so). I've never used winetricks before, and was hoping to avoid it since it wasn't necessary to run this program in the past, but if it would be beneficial I can do that. Shall I try that?

--- Comment #5 from himynameiszachandiamapirate@gmail.com 2009-07-31 21:47:18 --- I have now tested by installing mfc42 with winetricks, as suggested. however, this does not seem to help much. I get the same output as when I used my own copy of mfc42u (attached errors in the terminal, "unknown error in sequencer DLL" as a popup warning). The only difference this way is that I do not get the top line of my previous error (fixme:msvcrt:MSVCRT__wsetlocale 0 L".ACP"). Everything lse in the second attached error applies.
Is there anything else I can try? I would love to help get this running again.

--- Comment #6 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2010-09-07 16:48:31 CDT --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.3.2 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #7 from himynameiszachandiamapirate@gmail.com 2010-09-07 21:04:39 CDT --- Oh, I got no further help/suggestions, so I ended up giving up. Haven't installed wine in a very long time (well, a year-ish, it seems), and I don't actually have a copy of sonar 4 anymore to test... so I guess you can close this, if you'd like.
