Sound is choppy for Eidos introduction section then does not play at all for
the rest of the intro movie and during gameplay.

Does 'winetricks dmusic' help? If so, probably a dupe of bug 9027.

winetricks directmusic did solve this bug as well as (seemingly) bug 24546 but
seems to make the game struggle more.

Yep it works - I'm using wine 1.3.12 with directmusic from winetricks. (system
aptosid / Debian Sid/Unstable)
