Austin gave me this repro recipe (typos mine):

$ winetricks nocrashdialog ddr=gdi

# (it's in wisotool, but seems that url isn't stable)
extract:
$ unzip -d ffvii ff7demo.zip
$ cd ffvii
$ wine ff7demo.exe
Watch as Cloud walks down the stairs. He'll raise his sword to swing,
then the screen is supposed to rotate and you're supposed to get dropped into 
a fight/battle, but the game crashes.

For comparison, here's how to run on Windows 7:

extract zip
right click on ff7demo.exe, choose compatibility tab, use:
Windows 98/Windows ME mode
Run in 640x480 screen resolution
Disable visual themes
Disable desktop composition
This works, at least for a few minutes. I can't be completely sure
though, since it's not a clean install, and has had the full version
installed on it.
