I have Wine 1.1.23 installed on fc10. I installed MSWord 2000 and tried to run Equation Editor 3.0. MSWord ran well. EqnEd gave the error message documented above. Many Object types from the Insert Object menu also failed. Following this thread I set Wine to use the native usp10.dll and replaced the Wine ole32.dll.so with the Crossover ole32.dll.so. After this EqnEd worked well. I also installed Crossover 8.0; EqnEd worked terribly in this environment, possibly because I put it in a Win98 bottle.

I have installed Crossover 8.0 (root install), and then installed Office 2003 in a clean user profile in F10 - the equation editor works flawlessly in this environment for me.
Have you tried Word 2003 rather than Word 2000?
