Bug ID: 43366 Summary: Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup crashes at startup Product: Wine Version: 2.12 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: haakobja@gmail.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 58729 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=58729 Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup log
Hi,
I recently tried the Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup and the game fails at start up. It seems like it's able to succeed with the disk check, but start up fails.
I've attached a log from the latest run.

--- Comment #1 from Håkon haakobja@gmail.com --- It seems like I was wrong yestarday. This is an issue with the securom 2 copy protection, because a no cd crack resolved the issue. It would be nice to be able to play the game without needing a crack
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43366
--- Comment #2 from Håkon haakobja@gmail.com --- It's actually SafeDisc 2, not securom 2

--- Comment #3 from winetest@luukku.com --- Are you using Playonlinux with wine-staging?
https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=13082&...
Those test results are old, but all positive.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43366
--- Comment #4 from Håkon haakobja@gmail.com --- Yes, I'm currently using PlayOnLinux as my wine-frontend while the wine-staging version I'm using is the latest from the Fedora repositories.
I've seen the test results, and my setup is quite similar. I'll test more without PlayOnLinux later today, to see if that makes any difference. But I think it might be a bug.
For the record, I'm trying with windows version set to Windows 7. I've also tried Windows 98, but then I get an error message stating I should unload my debugger.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43366
--- Comment #5 from Håkon haakobja@gmail.com --- I've tested some more now, bypassing PlayOnLinux.
The same error occurs now. I've even tried with the physical disc (as I tried with CdEmu earlier), but it was no different. It still printing the same stack trace as posted earlier, so I think it's wine's fault
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43366
--- Comment #6 from Håkon haakobja@gmail.com --- I have the same problem with 007 Nightfire
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43366
--- Comment #7 from Håkon haakobja@gmail.com --- This is still a problem with Wine 2.13-staging. I haven't tried Wine 2.13-devel

--- Comment #9 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
resolving 'fixed' based on last comment, thanks Oleg!
But sadly, I don't have the original media to play with to check which commit fixed it (also if this is a dupe of existing SafeDisc bugs). I found a distributed "backup" but that one has the main executable 'QWC.exe' already "no-cd fixed" with no original/backup.

There is a distinct signature in the main executable when being protected with SafeDisc v2. It can be used to determine the exact version. The 'secdrv.sys' driver version can't be reliably used for this.

But sadly, I don't have the original media to play with to check which commit fixed it (also if this is a dupe of existing SafeDisc bugs).
Actually, I don't see the issue with the old wine as well: I deleted old prefix, created a fresh WinXP one, the game was installed and successfully launched. Probably, something was wrong with the initial report (since Håkon used PlayOnLinux + Staging branch, while I built vanilla wine)...

--- Comment #12 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello Oleg,
thanks for the testing! Likely a broken WINEPREFIX and/or broken Wine setup (PoL/Staging) then.
I'm changing the resolution to 'WORKSFORME'. 'INVALID' would be more correct but people got offended in the past and started arguing there is nothing wrong with their Wine setup etc. Avoids further discussion and keeps my sanity ;-)
Resolution 'FIXED' creates a false impression that a bug was fixed in Wine. Even worse, it will appear in official Wine release notes which is certainly not correct.
