Summary: Cannot switch back to Half Life 2 after alt-tabbing with managed windows Product: Wine Version: 0.9.49. Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: wine-x11driver AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: scott@open-vote.org
When running in full screen mode and using managed windows, if I alt-tab away from Half Life 2 (or some other window steals focus), then I have no way to return. I can still hear the sounds playing and the game appears to be running as normal, however there is no Half Life 2 in my taskbar or alt-tab programs. The steam windows appear to be functioning normally, and I can return to them.
I'm a bit perplexed, as I can't even figure out a workaround at this point other than wineserver -k

--- Comment #2 from Gregor Münch greg87@online.de 2007-11-13 17:39:58 --- Right, this is really annoying and it was working somewhere before August 07. As this happens with all wm's(compiz, kwin) I tried sofar I really think that this is a wine bug.

--- Comment #3 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-11-13 19:27:05 --- I'm guessing regression testing is in order. Seems like something does not handle full-screen attributes properly. Or Wine doesn't set them on the game's window.

--- Comment #9 from Bastiaan van der Weij b.j.van.der.weij@gmail.com 2007-11-19 05:15:42 --- I ran into the same problem when alt tabbing out of half life but found that when I click on the steam icon in the taskbar and select exit it prompts me that I still have steam games running after that it brings half life back on the foreground.

I have added your mail according to wine regression guide the two according bug reports but after adding or through a tab change I saw this bug report and thought I have added your mail misleadingly to this one so I have removed it. No need to become rude.

--- Comment #12 from Josh Green josh@resonance.org 2008-01-29 03:05:48 --- I have an issue to add to this bug. When I first ran half life 2 with Wine 0.9.54 I kept thinking the application was crashing, since the game window would suddenly disappear, showing the desktop, but I could still hear the game sounds. When I went to quit steam from the toolbar icon, it said that there were still steam applications and then showed hl2 on the alt-tab list (although it was not there after disappearing), which then allowed me to switch back.
I eventually realized that the reason hl2 kept losing focus was because my laptop was setup for 2 X screens (my projector and my LCD). The projector is RightOf my LCD, so whenever I moved the mouse to quickly to the right (looking to the right in the game), the application would loose focus and switch back to the desktop. Making the game pretty much unplayable. Disabling the second X screen makes the game run fairly flawlessly.
Maybe this should be created as a different bug though? Since the issue is that focus is lost due to other X screen getting triggered by mouse moving off the screen.

Not here! Now it works like a charm (although it takes a little while to change back to the game, but that is true also with windows anyway...)
