Summary: The Sims 3 blacks out the screen immediately when starting. Product: Wine Version: 1.3.14 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: open.jacob.a.brown@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=34415) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=34415) Output from terminal
Installed fine on Ubuntu 10.10 but the screen goes black when the game starts and I can only exit the game by killing the process. I installed Directx 9.0c and set the Options.ini file to use windowed mode with 800x600 1 resolution and that didn't fix this. I have seen others with the same concern in the Wine forum and in at least two other forums related to Ubuntu.
This was my third attempt at installing The Sims 3 on this system having used Wine, Winetricks and Playonlinux.
My system is a Acer Aspire Timeline X laptop 4820T-7633. It has the bear minimum hardware to run the game, but I have tested on WinXP and it ran fine.

Since you are using an Intel card, you may need to configure compressed texture support using driconf. Visit the forums if you can't figure out how to enable this, http://forum.winehq.org

configured compressed texture using driconf but still the same.
driconf and set "Enable S3TC texture compression even if software support is not available" to "Yes" in the Image Quality section.

--- Comment #4 from Jeff Zaroyko jeffz@jeffz.name 2011-05-01 20:55:45 CDT --- Is there any change if you update to wine-1.3.19? The other thing you can try is downgrading to wine-1.2.3 to see if this is a regression.

Would I need to reinstall the game as well? Also I have Playonlinux so I have multiple versions of the Wine API, so if I need to reinstall anyway then I would do so on one of those versions. If I can upgrade/downgrade without reinstalling, then I will do that.

I doubt the installation of the game affects this bug. Additionally, PlayOnLinux is not supported here, please use plain Wine when reporting/testing bugs.

I used Wine to install the game the last time but I went ahead and uninstall Playonlinux. The upgrade failed because my network dropped and the game disappointed, so I had to start from scratch. I hope it works this time.

--- Comment #9 from Jacob Brown open.jacob.a.brown@gmail.com 2011-05-03 23:42:20 CDT --- Install went fine but then something went wrong with my laptop, I have a desktop at home running the same version. I transfered the drive over and now I need to know how to set the wine prefixes for all the apps on the drive.
I don't know if The Sims 3 works but if I can get wine off the drive to work I can test it out.
If I can't get this to work I could reinstall again.

--- Comment #10 from Jacob Brown open.jacob.a.brown@gmail.com 2011-05-05 16:25:23 CDT --- I still have the same issue, so it's not my hardware. I will reinstall one more time but I wonder if the problem is related to DirectX.

Is this still an issue in current (1.7.6 or newer) wine? If so, please attach the terminal output in 1.7.6 (see http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log).
