Bug ID: 39132 Summary: Skyrim: flickering / glitchy shadows Product: Wine Version: 1.7.49 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: charles.goodwin@gmail.com Distribution: ---
The shadows in Skyrim flicker horribly, it is very glitchy.
Workaround is to downgrade to Wine 1.7.33 where the shadows work properly.

--- Comment #3 from PD Cant p_cantwell@hotmail.com --- OK, I'll add some info.
I've just encountered this bug. I previously had v1.9.2 for months, but I somehow lost part of wine-devel and began getting Ubuntu update errors.
Up until recently, Skyrim on Steam functioned perfectly, though the Steam client showed blank windows for their store and products. I've had this trouble with the Ubuntu version of Wine: 1.6.x, which would stop with a popup error window which drove me to find newer versions of Wine (I forgot what caused the error, maybe a "webproducts" site or something. This is probably due to an update to my /etc/hosts file blocking ad sites, but I only thought of it today.)
I updated to wine-staging v1.9.6 today. I noticed the flickering shadows when moving immediately. It is more pronounced at dusk/dawn, but is always happening.
Ubuntu 15.10 64-bit running unattended upgrades daily. EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512 MB DDR3 SDRAM PCI Express x16 (I know: I need newer hdw, but the budget won't allow it) Latest 64-bit nvidia drivers for Ubuntu: v340.96 ( using since 11/2015)
This is the only Windows graphics game I play. I play a few others ported to Linux by Steam. I view flash video in Firefox without trouble, in windows and full screen.
Let me know if you need other info from me. I'll stay at Wine-staging 1.9.6 because I only play a few hours on some weekends.

--- Comment #4 from PD Cant p_cantwell@hotmail.com --- I just got a crash in the Steam product sale popup window. It had the "webproduct" error in it. Here is part of the crash details:
ExecutablePath: /opt/wine-staging/bin/wine-preloader Package: wine-staging-i386 (not installed) <-[but it is installed! "not loaded"?] Problem: Crash ApportVersion: 2.19.1-0ubuntu5 Architecture: amd64 <skip some> ProcCmdline: C:\Program\Files\Steam\bin\steamwebhelper.exe --type=rend (then the line ended due to inability to resize the crash popup window.)
Yes, it was "steamwebhelper", not "webproduct". The memory fades quickly...

--- Comment #5 from tzone@posteo.de --- I experience this issue too.
Basically the thrown shadows (trees, etc.) consisted always of squares. The cloud shadows on land have changed in an annoying flickering way though with rapidly moving radiant lines on camera movement.
There is a workaround mentioned in a test report [1], which states to set bDeferredShadows=0 in SkyrimPrefs.ini. However this did not work for me.
My wine version is 1.9.5 with wine-staging (last CSMT enabled version) and mesa with d3d9 support. Disabling CSMT did not change the glitch. Linux Distribution is Gentoo 64 bit on a plain desktop profile (no compositing wm). Windows 7 mode globally in prefix.
Strange thing is, that I can’t recall to having this bug yesterday, which was the same wine version. I did a check of game data though, which changed one file and removed the ControlMap (Skyrim keymap; due to Skyrim bug). Couldn’t find a valid workaround since then. Unfortunately options like bDrawShadows=0 also don’t seem to disable shadows completely. Since the config is overridden occasionally by the game I still think, that it is actually the right one. ;-) Wineprefix contains dotnet35, vcrun2008 and steam via winetricks. No dxfullsetup, because mesa provides the libs.
PD Cant: The steamwebhelper crash is a known issue. (Bug #38960) You can workaround this by starting steam with the “-no-cef-sandbox” option. In case you changed the default WinXP as emulated system, you should still run steamwebhelper as WinXP, since it would otherwise still crash. You can add additional programs in winecfg and change the Windows version for them.

Does it make a difference if you disable nvapi.dll in winecfg? (makes sense only in Staging)

--- Comment #7 from tzone@posteo.de --- On an afterthought, I checked again with 1.8 and compared the result to 1.9.11. I couldn’t note a difference with that save. Note, that except for the Unofficial Skyrim Patch the installation was not modified back then. Adding the enhanced Lights and FX mod did probably remedy the issue though. For that save game it was still not fixed around Whiterun, but on a clean shadows mostly work again.
I still have some flickering on the corners of cast shadows and occasionally where shadow stripes appear. The largest one lately was a tower, but everything else works.
I also occasionally saw similar shadow stripes in mod screenshots, so I’d conclude, that it is mostly a Skyrim issue. Maybe it’s solved with Skyrim HD (or worsened). ;-)
The fps impact of Enhanced Lights and FX even on Intel graphics (Haswell) doesn’t render the game unplayable. It mostly increases contrast and disables ambient light.
Anyway the main issue with modding is getting the Mod managers to work.

Yes it does. I was having the exact same issue. I disabled nvapi from winecfg and now the game looks normal. Maybe it could be a good idea to add this solution to the Skyrim page on winehq.

--- Comment #9 from Forest forestcode@ixio.org --- Confirming:
Lots of shadow flickering while panning or moving in Skyrim (Legendary edition, 32-bit). It's especially bad in outdoor scenes, where large sections of ground rapidly alternate between brightly lit and covered in shadow.
nvidia 384.130-0ubuntu0~gpu17.10.1 winehq-staging 3.6.0~xenial
Disabling nvapi.dll in winecfg seems to fix this particular shadow flicker problem.
(I still see a mild shadow flicker on some surfaces, but it's not erratic; it might be a separate issue and not wine-specific).
