Summary: Text font smoothing inside Word 2007 or other apps Product: Wine Version: 1.3.17 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: quentin.denis@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=33980) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=33980) Screenshot illustrating the smoothing issue
Hi folks,
Font smoothing is now working fine in wine, however, it does only concern UI fonts. Indeed, winecfg looks nice and UI fonts in Word 2007 (or other Office components) are antialiased.
My problem concerns the font in the text zone, and in the font dropdown selection. The attached screenshot shows the difference between UI fonts and Text fonts.
How can I get text font smoothed?
Thanks, Quentin

--- Comment #3 from Marco Case casemarco@gmail.com 2011-05-17 08:26:02 CDT --- Can confirm this bug in Debian Lenny with latest wine 1.3.20 It affects just the fonts in the text area, not in the UI. Many fonts ("calibri" and "times new roman", for example) appear antialiased only at bigger sizes.

--- Comment #8 from 4ugeistr mini_me@ukr.net --- Created attachment 47071 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=47071 antialiasing for small fonts not convenient
wine 1.4.1 under Ubuntu 13.10
As Marco Case specified - it's font-dependant. For me: Times New Roman - font smoothing works starting from size 12 Arial - starting from size 12 Calibri - starting from size 8 Cambria - starting from size 14
Note: antialiasing on smaller fonts is a hell to read =\ so no smoothing looks much more convenient with current smoothing method. Attached comparison of Times New Roman and Calibri as example

--- Comment #9 from Alexandre Julliard julliard@winehq.org --- The font menu is not antialiased on Windows either. Bitmap fonts (like your notepad example) can't be antialiased. Grayscale antialiasing is based on the GASP table of the font. I don't think there's anything to fix here, it's all working as designed.
