No, it is not a problem anymore.
Indeed it was a problem with a wrong locale. I set the environmental variable LANG in .profile to Polish and Polish fonts and characters appeared at once.
It took me 3 years to solve and I did not find any references to this in Wine documentation. Maybe it would be good to add it, so people do not waste so much time as me.
