Summary: Pixel-Shader must be disabled and re-enabled to launch portal Product: WineHQ Apps Database Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: website-bugs AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: bennokorn@compuserve.de
Created an attachment (id=9435) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=9435) Error that appears when Portal is launched the first time
When I launch Portal 1.0 the first time I get the error that is in the attachement.
Then I open winecfg and disable PixelShader.
When I launch portal now it quits with the graphical error message that says: "This game has a minimum requirement of DirectX 8.0 to run properly."
Now I open winecfg again and re-enable PixelShader.
Now Portal runs fine.

--- Comment #1 from Korn wine@temporaryforwarding.com 2007-12-01 10:40:23 --- Forgot to say that I use Ubuntu 7.10 and have a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M graphic card.
I have the graphic drivers from the repository installed.

--- Comment #2 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-12-01 14:43:41 --- Your card probably missdetected by Wine and reported as higher capability card. When you disable shaders you force Portal into dxlevel 70 or even 60.

--- Comment #3 from Korn wine@temporaryforwarding.com 2007-12-01 15:12:53 --- The Quadro NVS 140M even supports DirectX 10.
And the game works after enabling PixelShaders again.
So I don't understand you comment, sorry. ;-)

--- Comment #4 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-12-01 16:51:54 --- Can you retry it with new Wine version 0.9.50 and -dxlevel 90? Also what exactly the video drivers version are you using?

--- Comment #5 from Korn wine@temporaryforwarding.com 2007-12-01 17:10:01 --- NVIDIA Driver Version: 100.14.19 The nvidia-glx-new package from the repositories.
wine 0.9.50 is not yet available in a deb-package.

In wine 0.9.50 nearly the same error occurs. There are some new informations at the end of the file.
Again I can only play Portal after re-enabling the PixelShader.

--- Comment #7 from Korn wine@temporaryforwarding.com 2007-12-02 07:22:37 --- I have to correct me.
I _don't_ have to disable and re-enable the PixelShader.
When the attached error occurs I just have to launch Portal again and all works fine.
Therefore I change the summary of this bug report.

What is the difference between starting Portal the first and the second time?
So what does wine change to make Portal run properly the second time?
I attached the current output when Portal runs the first time.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10628
--- Comment #9 from Korn wine@temporaryforwarding.com 2007-12-05 11:17:59 --- I furthermore noticed that Portal just runs properly when the command to run Portal is executed just after the first trial did fail. When there is a longer time between both trials (do not know the exact time) the second one will also fail.
