Created an attachment (id=33298) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=33298) Image showing the problem
Steps to reproduce: 1) remove ~/.wine 2) install Civilization 4 complete 3) wine Civilization4.exe 4) load my save 5) end the turn
Behaviour: Black screen and HUD is OK. The game doesn't hang. See attachment (left image)
Expected behaviour: There should be no black screen. See attachment (right image)
Workaround: winetricks msxml3

--- Comment #4 from vpeltola@yahoo.com 2011-09-05 23:01:50 CDT --- At some point all my games ended up with the black map as described here. Saved games were also unusable and loaded with a black screen. I just confirmed that installing the native msxml3.msi fixed even the saved games that I had not been able to load. So far everything seems to work well with this work around.

--- Comment #6 from Jay jaynobyl@gmx.de 2013-06-07 13:55:27 CDT --- For me, it happens as soon as I discover the Calendar-Technology which should center the world-map and show you how large it is. Saving and loading the game with native xml3 is a workaround.

--- Comment #8 from hanska2@luukku.com --- Well it's nice that there is workaround, but it would be even better that there would be fix for this issue.
Can anyone confirm that he has this issue with builtin component? And if so could he provide up to date debug log?
That would help a lot.

--- Comment #9 from Goblinstomper@gmail.com --- not seeing this when discovering the calender with built-in msxml3, although I have encountered black screen at end of turn once (settings for msxml3 was not configured at the time, is native then build-in default unless otherwise is specified?) - reloading the game 'solved' it. Wine 1.7.24

--- Comment #10 from Goblinstomper@gmail.com --- although that said.. did encounter it when building the Stonehenge wonder, saving and loading did not solve anything.

--- Comment #11 from hanska2@luukku.com --- I think builtin, native is the default.
See the comment 1.
Do the steps 3,4,5 and paste here the debug using builtin msxml3. Then do the same but using native.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26142
--- Comment #12 from Goblinstomper@gmail.com --- too big to attach to the tracker and I'm not wiz enough to know how to best truncate it; using built-in msxml3 https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B38pJ-Zt2r1PWHNkR2xXWGNRalU/edit?usp=sharin... Trying to set msxml3 to native results in a crash on launch, so I suppose there is no native version bundled. Default values gives the same results as using built-in, e.g. "black screen" when building the stonehenge wonder.

--- Comment #18 from Tom Li biergaizi2009@gmail.com --- Yes, I can confirm the problem still presents with wine-1.9.13.
Today I was playing a game of Civ4, everything was okay at the beginning. After about 70 rounds of game, after I clicked the "next round" button, suddenly the entire map became black! But the game didn't hang so I saved the game.
I restarted the entire wine and the game, and tried to reload the game, but now the reloading has caused the game to hang or even crash. Looks like it has some difficulties to load the game, maybe my save a corrupted game? I tried to do so in a Windows virtual machine with the same file but it was okay.
Then I start to suspect about my Wine prefix, it is dirty and has tons of libraries/DLLs installed. I started the game with a fresh Wine prefix, the game runs without installing anything extra, but still hang when loading the save file.
Finally I installed msxml3 and the game loaded flawlessly. I don't know if the issue was triggered by my messy wine prefix...

No, I have this bug on both Intel and nVidia cards.
Can we change this bug's status from UNCONFIRMED? Multiple people have confirmed the bug so far.

Can we change this bug's status from UNCONFIRMED? Multiple people have confirmed the bug so far.
Sure, though it won't affect anything.

--- Comment #26 from NSLW lukasz.wojnilowicz@gmail.com --- The same happens in a demo version on wine 7.2. Can be hit in the game very quickly and in every run.
Steps to reproduce in the demo: 1) remove ~/.wine 2) install civilization4demo_multi.zip 3) wine Civilization4.exe 4) Click on "Play the demo" 5) Click on "Indian Empire" then OK 6) Click OK to confirm your details 7) Click OK to confirm your difficulty level 8) Click on "Continue" to start a game 9) Click on "Settler" and press "B" key to build a city 10) Click on "Stonehenge" to start building it in the city 11) Press Shift+Enter to end a turn and repeat it like ca. 30 times until Stonehenge gets completed (you get many notifications along the way, so answer to them as you like)
While testing, just be sure to not use a version with the regression from the bug #52663.

--- Comment #28 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr --- Does the bug still occur with wine-9.0-RC2?
I did not manage to reproduce the steps to show up the bug.
