Does 'winetricks ie7' make a difference?
Yes, it makes.
ie7 causes broken msxml2 it is still better to use ie6 instead. However even if the installation manager does somewhat work, you can only use it for loading update service packs but no installation can be done with it.

--- Comment #5 from denis bonnenfant denis.bonnenfant@diderot.org 2012-03-19 17:43:32 CDT --- maybe duplicate of bug 17089 ?
Anyway, now it works with winetricks ie7, not perfectly, but SW2011 is installable.

--- Comment #6 from NSLW lukasz.wojnilowicz@gmail.com 2012-08-18 04:32:10 CDT --- It is still an issue in Wine 1.5.11. winetricks ie7 doesn't help. Tested on SolidWorks 2011.

Steps to reproduce: 1) remove ~/.wine 2) sh winetricks ie7 3) change windows version to "Vista" (solidworks 2013 won't install in Windows XP) 4) wine /sldim/sldim.exe 5) warning about 32 bit (normal thing, everything is O.K.) 6) press o.k.
Progress bar moves a little bit and freezes.

--- Comment #12 from Maarten Bezemer maarten.bezemer@gmail.com --- It seems to be better:
$ rm ~/.wine $ WINEARCH=win32 ./sldim/sldim.exe
The installation window is not blank, but quality/resolution is bad and the window seems empty (no background, left panel, etc.).
It shows 'Starting the Installation Manager' and nothing happens. When minimizing and maximizing, the window contents is updated, asking to specify the type of installation. Clicking next again does not seem to be working, but min/max again shows next screen.
Keeping min/max-ing the window allows me to continue through the installation process until it is 'Connecting to SolidWorks...' which seems to be not working (takes forever).
(wine-1.7.34, WINEARCH=win32, Kubuntu 14.10, 64-bit)

--- Comment #13 from Ken Sharp imwellcushtymelike@gmail.com --- Does this still occur in Wine 9.8 or later?
