Summary: Call of Cthulhu: overall low performance compared to Vista Product: Wine Version: 0.9.58. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: vkojouharov@gmail.com
The wine version for this bug is actually 0.9.59, but as of the time of writing, this version is not available from the select box.
This bug is about the overall slow game performance of Call of Cthulhu ( http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=3981 ), compared to the same game with the same settings under Windows Vista. Overall, the game is at least twice as slow, as compared to Vista, maybe more.
The test machine is a core 2 duo @ 2.20 GHz, with an 8400M GS video card, with an nvidia driver version of 100.14.19. The same settings are used on both wine and vista. The the resolution is set to 1600x1200, and the other graphics related setting, the AA, is set to None.

--- Comment #2 from Viktor Kojouharov vkojouharov@gmail.com 2008-04-12 05:19:13 --- I've updated to the latest 192.12 nvidia driver. There was no visible improvement to the performance of the game.

--- Comment #3 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-10-17 14:48:04 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.6 or newer) Wine?

--- Comment #4 from Viktor Kojouharov vkojouharov@gmail.com 2008-10-17 16:14:06 --- It has definitely been improved, but noticeably, it's still at least twice as slow as playing it through windows. Now there are places where the framerate is really acceptable, but still a lot of places where it falls below the 24fps line. In windows, it is smooth in those same places.

--- Comment #5 from Predatory QQmber virtuousfox@gmail.com 2008-11-30 06:54:28 --- you sure if it's bug at all ? with all these redundant d3d->opengl work wine has to make and 8400M card doesn't seem to be greate card for 1600x1200 resolution in conditions like that. maybe it's just natural consequence of lack in driver-level d3d support ?
also, you should try some tricks from here ( http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys ), especially "OffscreenRenderingMode".
and it would be very cool if you could write fresh test-report in AppDB with numbers of your testing, add some screenshots with newest wine, etc.

--- Comment #6 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-06-02 10:37:00 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.22 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #7 from Viktor Kojouharov vkojouharov@gmail.com 2009-06-02 10:59:59 --- there has been no difference in the overall speed of the game. compared to running it in windows, it is still unbearably slow.

--- Comment #8 from Predatory QQmber virtuousfox@gmail.com 2009-07-11 07:49:22 --- just played a little in 1.1.25 and noticed slowdowns with no reason like looking on the wall and fps drops in 2-3 times.
generally, fps is fine but those slowdowns happen quite often
there are no warnings or errors in the log

--- Comment #9 from Matej Mosko moskom@centrum.sk 2009-07-18 17:28:31 --- In my view bug 18325 http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18325 called "timed events" is the same as this. There is actually not problem with timed events in call of cthulhu, but with slow movement of the camera and character. All other enviroment is moving with the original speed. No FPS drops, just this kind of slowdown. VSync on and off, without any improvement. wine version 1.1.25

--- Comment #10 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2010-04-30 17:11:13 --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for 6 months. Is this still an issue in current (1.1.43 or newer) wine?
