At installation, there is an error message that wine can't find the program
starter. When launching the game buy clicking the EXE-file directly, the game
starts but crashes, either while setting up the game or just as the game has
begun. The only error message is that wine has encountered a serious error and
needs to close.

This ticket has not been updated for long time. Development recommends
to check the status on your bug every release or two and let to be known if the
bug is still present. If not, mark it fixed. If you are no longer able to put
effort to this ticket, you can abandon it.

Is this still an issue with 1.7.2 or higher ?

Works here in Wine-1.7.28. I played several turns in Civ2.
