Summary: Game crashes at startup when resolution is set higher than 640x480 Product: Wine Version: 1.1.43 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: granamachine-wa@yahoo.com.ar
This bugs affects at least 12 different versions from at least five games from Winning Eleven series.
To get the game running, you must:
1- Activate "Emulate virtual desktop" in Wine settings 2- Disable audio in Wine settings (as there is another bug associated with this) 3- Run settings.exe and set resolution at 640x480, either windowed or fullscreen
If you set resolution higher than 640x480, then the bug happens.

Finally got an Ati card, an old one (Radeon X550), I could only use the free driver. So I tried these games in the following, clean room environments:
Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome), Nvidia Geforce 8800 GS, proprietary driver Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome), Ati Radeon X550, free driver Mandriva One 2010 (KDE), Nvidia Geforce 8800 GS, proprietary driver Mandriva One 2010 (KDE), Ati Radeon X550, free driver
The bug is still there. I will try soon with a newer Ati card, so I can use the proprietary driver.

I can confirm the a crash with we8 and wine-1.3.0-58-g300536d. However the stack and back-trace look different to what is attached to this bug. Not sure why.
Please take note there are two different bugs affecting these games. To replicate this bug, you must disable audio in Wine settings. If you set resolution at 640x480 and enable audio, then the other bug will take place (see bug 22598). Maybe 22598 preceeds 22597, and that's the reason behind your different backtraces.

--- Comment #42 from Austin Lund austin.lund@gmail.com 2010-08-08 00:35:29 --- Running with +heap is the only way to get a consistent crash. It involves a 0xfeeefeee, so something is freed when it shouldn't be. Perhaps there is a missing AddRef somewhere.

--- Comment #43 from Austin Lund austin.lund@gmail.com 2010-08-09 22:14:21 --- When running in valgrid, the wine-preloader process just give the message
wine: Invalid address
then quits. Very annoying.
It does seem like something is not having AddRef called on it at some stage and is being freed when Release is called, but there was another pointer out there and hence has 0xfeeefeee when running with +heap. But this is just speculation.

The problem is that the surface is in use as a render target, but the associated texture isn't, as far as wined3d is concerned. I'll work on a fix.

You shouldn't hear any sounds, since you have to disable audio to play the game. Unless you are also aplying Austin Lund's patch for bug 22598.
I am very grateful with Henri and Austin, but I have yet to learn how to apply patches and install Wine from source.

Do you also get the black screen if you disable audio in Wine settings?
Wich distro and video card are you using? In case you're using a Debian-based distro, can I ask you to upload the .deb Wine package already patched?
Thanks in advance.

--- Comment #58 from Austin Lund austin.lund@gmail.com 2010-09-14 05:27:24 CDT --- The Winning Eleven 8 executable still crashes for me. Still a reference counting issue. Crashes on IDirect3DSurface8Impl_AddRef.

--- Comment #59 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr 2010-09-14 09:49:42 CDT --- for me too, winning eleven 8 demo crashes in higher resolutions. But PES3 does not crash anymore. So, the bugs were different. Anyway this bug report is messy. I think we should close this one and open a new one for WE8.

Pro Evolution Soccer 3 isn't affected by this bug. Only PES 4 through 6 are.

--- Comment #62 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr 2011-03-22 01:52:39 CDT --- So, now the problem is clear. Wine tries to Addref a pointer that is already released.

Well, yes, there is a black screen now, but doesn't that mean that the game keeps crashing?
Should I open another bug report with this new behavior?

--- Comment #66 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr 2011-05-02 23:36:16 CDT --- The game does not crash like you can see in the console. Only, it gives a blank screen. So this bug is fixed. You can fill another bug report for the blank screen.
