Summary: UFO Extraterrestials: Problems with mouse cursor and textures. Product: Wine Version: 1.0.0 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: RodionKarimov@yandex.ru
Problem with mouse: cursor is shown not exactly there where it is, for exmple, when cursor is graphically shown a long away from button - the button is selected, when it is on button - button is not selected. There is some problem in inner game mouse driver, because, when i am changing mouse sensitivity in file "ufo-et.ini", that is located in "data" directory from 255 to 100, image of mouse cursor starts to be much closer to there, where it actually is. But not exactly. And some times image of cursor again starts to go far from exact cursor location, for example: sometimes when rotating the globe or in tactical mode, when shooting. Problem with textures: when in "ufo-et.ini" "scissortesting=true", that default is, there is not seen in global mode: images of soldiers; research tasks; rifles, pistols, grenades and ammunition of soldiers; and name of the save game that is being enter when saving game. When "scissortesting=false" all of that is shown, but name of the saving game is very little, project names is also very little, images of soldioers and weapons is also very little. And everything of this is not on its place, for example images of weapons is right and down from its location; images of soldiers are placed down from its locations; names of projects are right and down from its location, but they are selecting and activating by mouse at that position where they must be.

Wine shows this in console, when sometimes it is fault to run UFO Extraterrestrials, may be the problem is in fglrx. I am using 8.49.

this is actually an exact duplicate of http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=881 this bug, that was closed (which to me, seems to be of some miscommunication - the bug was or is not resolved still)
Was bummed too, just got the game :(

I have to run UFO Extraterrestrials with data/videos removed, otherwise although the movie plays the game freezes at the end of the movie or when it interrupts. Intresting, but when playing movies - sound plays with it.

--- Comment #11 from Alexey Loukianov mooroon2@mail.ru 2011-01-08 07:14:26 CST --- Confirming this bug to still exists as of Wine 1.3.11.
I used "UFO Extraterrestrials Gold" version of the game that was bought, downloaded and installed from Steam.
Setting sensitivity=0 in the game settings ini almost "fixes" the bug: game cursor gets displayed right at place the game would receive click at. But there are some situations in game when mouse cursor desync occurs. Most of the times desync happens when I hold down right mouse button to do something, for example to move the geoscape.
Had tested this game under VirtualBOX + Windows XP + Windows build of WineD3D. Looks like problems with mouse cursor desync also happen inside VirtualBOX, but only in case I do not enable "Absolute pointing device" in the properties of the VirtualBOX VM. However there are no mouse cursor desync problem on the system running native Windows XP (i.e. not under virtual machine).
Looks like the game seems to use some rarely used Direct Input mode that isn't correctly emulated by Wine and by VirtualBOX, but works good in the native OS.

--- Comment #12 from Alexey Loukianov mooroon2@mail.ru 2011-09-10 19:31:09 CDT --- This bug is fixed.
Mouse problems were fixed by Xinput2 support. Problems with textures were fixed somewhere during 2009-2010, I hadn't been able to reproduce it ever on my workstation.
Problem is that the game now is totally unplayable as it crashes at start with no ways to workaround it due to some incompatibilities with wine's implementation of dsound/directmusic. I had done regression testing and would post separate bug report today.
P.S. I had already posted a report concerning UFO:ET crashing at start due to wine's dsound/directmusic long ago (bug #25728) but there wasn't a lot of activity over that report since.

But there are no textures in tactical missions. Everything is black around except of images of soldiers. Even setting "scissortesting=false" in "ufo-et.ini" does not solve the problem.

What is essential: Wine version you had used, GPU vendor and driver version, any native DLLs overrides, any changes to the default contents of ufo-et.ini, e.t.c. Thanks in advance.

Mach64/r128 are not relevant. From the version numbers I conclude that you use MesaGL and open-source drivers for your GPU. It is well known that the current state of open source GPU drivers is far from perfect so your best bet would be to install Catalyst/fglrx binary drivers blob from AMD and retest the game with it.
Wine v1.3.29
Huh, and what about sound, have you got any problems with it?
Replaced DLLs d3dx9_26, d3dx9_36
It should be enough to only replace d3dx9_26 - this is one the game actually use.

While it's true that the free drivers aren't exactly perfect, I generally have better hopes for things working with r600g than with fglrx. The problems with r600g are typically related to performance rather than to rendering correctness or stability.

In this case we have 10.04 LTS which results in pretty old stock KMS/DRI2/Mesa. Also keep in mind that not every user out there is rebuilding Mesa with dload support for S3TC decoding and installs accompanying third-party lib. So I still would recommend to give Catalyst a try.
P.S. BTW, Henri, what should Peter do in case he would get perfectly rendered picture with Catalyst driver and bugged render with OSS driver? Whose bug should it be considered - Wine or Mesa?

--- Comment #21 from Alexey Loukianov mooroon2@mail.ru 2011-10-14 13:55:36 CDT --- Peter, forgot to ask another thing: do you use desktop compositing in Kwin and/or Compiz? If the answer is positive - please, try to retest with desktop compositing turned off. Indirect rendering sometimes can result in really strange consequences.

I downloaded the latest .run file: ati-driver-installer-11-9-x86.x86_64.run Well.... I installed.... It is starting, but I see only the nice blue background of the wine's desktop. What I did(doing) wrong?

Sure. I guess the point I'm making is that in the general case moving from r600g to fglrx isn't necessarily an improvement. (And black textures like that could actually be a case of missing s3tc support, although you'd have corresponding errors in the Wine debug output then.)
P.S. BTW, Henri, what should Peter do in case he would get perfectly rendered picture with Catalyst driver and bugged render with OSS driver? Whose bug should it be considered - Wine or Mesa?
Likely Mesa, but you can't always tell without someone debugging it first.

Peter, I had send you a message directly to your e-mail so we don't spam wine-bugs list with discussion about how to get Catalyst driver installed on Kubuntu 10.04 LTS. Inform me in case you didn't receive that message, I would resend it if needed.

Sorry,Alexey but there was no messages from you...
Peter, I sent you three messages yesterday, two from my mail.ru mail boax and one from my gmail account. Looks like their all had been lost in transit, I suspect that it is the fault of ukr.net. Also I had received two messages from you, including one with the note about Russian language and another one about ICQ. Unfortunately I do not use ICQ nowdays. Maybe you've got another mail address I can contact you on? Any mailbox on big public service like gmail, mail.ru, yandex.ru, hotmail.com would do. Another place we may contact on it Steam, my account name there is "lexatwo". Also nowdays I'm pretty frequent visitor to the official Steam forums (got same nickname there) and also you may PM me on ixbt.com forums (lexa2 nickname).
