Bug #: 30859 Summary: After upgrade Wine is now inoperable. Cannot be reinstalled. Product: Wine Version: 1.4 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: wineserver AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: mr2131@cebridge.net Classification: Unclassified
With the latest beta Wine 1.5, my wine program loader is now inoperable. I have been unable to reinstall the last stable version of wine successfully. None of my programs that ran on Wine will now open and the program loader keeps telling me that it is waiting to install. When I try to launch Steam, I get a little window that says there is an internal error.

--- Comment #1 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2012-06-06 16:13:33 CDT --- Please attach terminal output.
Does 'wine notepad' work?
Note that installing/reinstalling the package is a distro problem, not a problem in wine itself.

--- Comment #3 from Mark Eoberts mr2131@cebridge.net 2012-06-06 21:12:55 CDT --- No, the wine notepad does not load up. It flashes on the screen and then flashes off.
I can't install anything to wine because my wine can no longer access my drives and it can no longer see any of the programs that I had installed under it. Apparently, it was unable to complete the install because when I try to access wine, the icon now says that it is waiting to install.

$ mv ~/.wine ~/.wine-bak $ wine notepad
and attach the output if it fails.

--- Comment #8 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net 2012-06-13 10:58:12 CDT --- We've had a couple of reports on the forum with the same console output as reported in comment 6. Both are Ubuntu 12.04 users.

One of them reported solving the problem by installing POL. Maybe a packaging issue?

--- Comment #9 from Alexandre Julliard julliard@winehq.org 2012-06-13 11:10:20 CDT --- Yes, the Ubuntu package apparently includes a hack for bug 30410, which doesn't work properly. Not a Wine bug.

--- Comment #14 from duncan.clough+wine@gmail.com 2012-06-28 15:55:37 CDT --- I'm seeing a similar issue. A lot of wine programs are failing to load properly. Notepad still works in pre-existing prefixes, but is also giving me the "wine: cannot get pid from lock (lock isn't locked)" error.
The link given in the previous correspondence is not a link to a bug filed with Ubuntu. And the workaround of removing lilo doesn't look like a viable long-term solution.
This issue is also probably continuing to affect wine users, so this shouldn't be marked as resolved upstream unless there is a direct reference to it being resolved in Ubuntu.

That's good to know. I was concerned that this was resolved prematurely - I wasn't supposed to sound impatient. Apologies for the misunderstanding.
If it's any help, Wine was working yesterday but has stopped working now that I've installed the latest updates.
