The game in question is Halo: Reach and is part of The Master Chief Collection installed via Steam.
Weapons fire often has unusual boxes around it. Sometimes they're transparent (but visible) and sometimes they're all black. I've only noticed it on Covenant weapons fire (lasers, etc) but haven't played for long.
I haven't found a PC demo of the game, but I'll test it if I do.
I note Bug 55320 but have no idea if it's related.
Same issue on Proton (with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 because it doesn't work with dxvk).
To get Steam working needs arial (Bug 32342).
