mouse cursor doesn't show on any wine programs - when i move the cursor over any proram emulated through wine including the wine config the cursor disappears but the mouse is still able to click buttons and other things which make doing anything at all quite hard

What distro? Where did you got Wine from and how installed it? Can you remove / rename ~/.wine directory and run 'wine notepad'? Does it show the mouse pointer?
ubuntu 8.10; got wine from this site; yes i can (to all other questions) and no, when i open notepad it doesn't show the cursor

Did you actually removed ~/.wine directory and ran 'wine notepad'?
No this is not major. It's more of invalid or works for me.

No this is not major. It's more of invalid or works for me.
how would i find out what's wrong with my system config? - i renamed the wine directory - i deleted unpermanently the directory and could still run the notepad and the cursor didn't show

What video card / driver version are you using? Does tweaking the HWCursor/SWCursor option in xorg.conf help?
according to administration>hardware drivers i'm not using any drivers - i know i probably should be -how do i find out what hardware i have; how do i get to the HWCursor/SWCursor option in xorg.conf; u'll have to forgive my ignorance i only started using ubuntu on wed/thurs this week
