Summary: OS X cannot redirect steam:// URL to Steam.exe Product: Wine Version: 1.1.44 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Mac OS X 10.6 Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: richardcavell@mail.com
Created an attachment (id=28798) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=28798) Dialog box
I am running the PC version of Steam within OS X. I have installed Half-Life. Now I would like to install the high-definition pack. The way to do this is to visit the link:
steam://installaddon/halflifehd
However, clicking on this link does not automatically send the click to Steam (so whatever API is used by Steam to register steam:// to redirect to Steam.exe is having no effect).
When I click on the above link, I get a dialog box within OS X (attached). From within this dialog, I can select any OS X application (*.app) to receive the steam:// click. However, if I navigate my drive_c directory, all Windows executables, including Steam.exe, are gray and cannot be selected. Therefore, I cannot redirect it to the PC version of Steam. (It's worth noting that one could redirect it to the Mac version of Steam).
This is obviously a problem with Wine fitting into the OS X design paradigm. But the program doesn't work as it's supposed to, so it's a bug.

--- Comment #4 from tblodt@icloud.com --- This is not a wine bug. This is an unimplemented feature.
This feature can't really be implemented, because only actual mac apps can open URLs (or files), and Wine is not a real Mac app.
You should be able to install the HD pack by running:
wine iexplore
and putting the Steam URL in the address box there.

Correct. (Where "real Mac app" should be read as "bundled Mac app".)

Even easier would be:
wine start steam://installaddon/halflifehd

--- Comment #6 from tblodt@icloud.com --- Is there any chance that Wine will ever include an app bundle, or is that domain reserved for Crossover?
