Wine crashes when installing the update X1.0.1 for Endnote X1 with the message "Installation ended prematurely because of an error". See attached console log.
For me (as a non-hacker) the problem looks analog to the one in bug 8003 "EndNote X does not install" (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8003).
System: Ubuntu Gutsy with Wine 9.57

I tried it on a system without the actual endnote program and get the same error. So you can test the update wihtout having an endnote license.
I used the command: wine msiexec /p *.msp

I tested the update with Wine 1.1.10 on Ubuntu 8.10. It seems that the update process goes well. However Endnote will not launch after the update has been installed (see attached error log).
