Summary: Supreme Commander: Input field too narrow to enter the CD key Product: Wine Version: 1.1.1 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: hcvst@gmx.net
Hi,
I cannot enter the CD key to "Supreme Commander" fully as the input fields are too narrow for some sections. In particular "UMW2" does not fit into field 4 as shown below.
XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-4444-XXXX
This is similar to bug# 9924, which is closed. Applying the winetricks or dpi workaround described there does not work for me.
I am running Ubuntu 8.04 (2.6.24-19-generic) @ 1680x1050.
This is the first time I use wine. Please let me know if you need more infos.
Regards, HC

--- Comment #1 from Tomasz Sałaciński tsalacinski@gmail.com 2008-07-16 00:25:01 --- I can confirm this bug. Indeed, in some games, entering CD-Key is not possible (the fields are too narrow).
Some games are not limiting the number of characters in each field, they are just checking if the character won't get out of the text box (so, the wider box, the longer text you can type into).
I think changing the font to a smaller one can help you with that (not playing with DPI)

--- Comment #2 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-07-17 16:03:14 --- I don't remember this happening before, with Wine 0.9.5x/6x. Can someone try an older version of Wine and figure out if this is a regression? I have the game, but it's at home...

--- Comment #3 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-07-19 02:45:48 --- Works fine for me with a clean .wine directory.

--- Comment #4 from Luke L lukehasnoname@gmail.com 2008-08-23 14:26:24 --- This has affected me typing "NMWW" into the box; I have to use a fake key to play with friends on my Ubuntu Hardy install. This has affected me in Wine 1.0 and 1.1.x

--- Comment #5 from reso resonantfate@gmail.com 2008-08-31 01:17:42 --- i encountered this bug also, while installing Supreme Commander and have a possible workaround.
i noted that my key was entirely in caps, i assumed because that way there can be no confusion between similar characters such as lowercase L and uppercase I and attempted to substitute lowercase characters in my problem key field, B, like so: AAAA-bbbb-CCCC-DDDD-EEE. this allowed me to procede.
i think that the user who stated that the problem is more than there is insufficient room to type the key characters and SHOW them, as opposed to the key being invalid. it's purely a gui issue i guess.
noteworthy thought: using lowercase letters in this situation worked since they took up less room. using a smaller font when faced with this problem would probably have the same effect, especially if your application is case sensitive.

--- Comment #10 from roy rtg.roy@hotmail.com 2008-11-14 08:54:12 --- Hi, I too have this problem with FEAR Combat in wine 1.1.8
the combinations giving me gip are WAM8 and GUM2
if you could reduce the font by one pixel or widen the text box by 1 maybe it would go
here is a better link (the official site) for downloading that game as gamershell doesnt always give good speed and doesnt mind cancelling your download after 99% sometimes. I have played it on windows, great graphics.
