--- Comment #1 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello AdeC,
the game is very old (file dates are from 1996). It requests a low graphics mode on startup:
--- snip --- err:x11settings:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsEx No matching mode found 320x240x8 @0! (desktop) <exit> --- snip ---
You need to start the game in virtual desktop mode:
--- snip --- $ wine explorer /desktop=killingtime,320x240 KILLTIME.EXE --- snip ---
Doesn't crash for me but the screen remains black. GDI as the DirectDrawRenderer doesn't seem to help.

$ nexus4[~/Downloads] wine --version wine-1.7.15

--- Comment #2 from AdeC adec2010@hotmail.co.uk --- Yes same for me when i run that too. Would it be possible to run this through xinit?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35848
--- Comment #3 from AdeC adec2010@hotmail.co.uk --- Seems xinit will not display in 8bit for me and having tried the other options on the wine 256 color recommendations page this just refuses to display in 8 bit color

--- Comment #4 from Jeff D. Hanson jhansonxi@gmail.com --- I just finished testing this with 1.7.34 but had the same problem. Test results submitted (in the queue ATM).
Game requires 256 colors and I was able to start it with Xephyr. It does not work with VNC because it requires both 640x480 and 320x240 resolution while vnc4server only supports a single resolution.
Opening screen is black. Audio is present. After a few seconds, the intro video starts but only a green screen is shown (audio is present). After the video plays (can be skipped with left-click), another black screen is shown, presumably the menu. Pressing "q" quits.
Game videos use Cinepak. When a game video is loaded with GSpot (in AppDB) it indicates the Cinepak codec is not present (bug #38035). This can be resolved but doesn't fix the game.
