Bug ID: 42034 Summary: Photoshop: Incorrect/Missing texts with builtin gdiplus Product: Wine Version: 1.9.23 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: gdiplus Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: fincer89@hotmail.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 56508 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=56508 Layer style window, Photoshop CC 2015, Wine 1.9.23 32-bit (missing texts)
As the title says, with builtin gdiplus many critical texts are not rendered correctly, tested with Photoshop CC 2015.
If Windows native gdiplus override is used, the texts are rendered correctly but the program is very unstable to start at all. Crashes may occur multiple times during the launch sequence. That's why builtin gdiplus may be preferred since it never crashes the program at startup. As a side effect, this bug is present and makes usability of the program very troublesome sometimes.
Wine 1.9.23 32-bit prefix.

--- Comment #2 from Rafael Ristovski rafael.ristovski@gmail.com --- Can confirm with Wine Staging 2.4 on a 32bit prefix. Native override seems stable so far though.

--- Comment #3 from Fincer fincer89@hotmail.com --- Still an issue with the newest Wine 2.8 (Staging Git). Builtin gdiplus.
Many buttons are invisible even if native gdiplus is used.

--- Comment #4 from winetest@luukku.com --- It would good if the title would include Photoshop CC 2015 since there are lots of different versions of this program. The title can be easily adjusted if the problem is common between versions.
I quess there is a channel for gdiplus that should be used for getting a log. For now even default output of wine could expose something.
Only pictures doesn't really help.

--- Comment #5 from Fincer fincer89@hotmail.com --- I re-tested occurence of this behavior with the latest Wine 2.17 (non-staging) & clean Photoshop CC 2015 32-bit and 64-bit installations.
Can't reproduce anymore, texts are visible. Not sure if my previous prefix was affected somehow.
Closing as invalid.

--- Comment #6 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net --- Why invalid rather than fixed? Another user also reported having the problem.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42034
--- Comment #7 from Fincer fincer89@hotmail.com --- I previously had a wineprefix which had Photoshop CC 2015 installed. I ran the the program inside that prefix with the latest Wine 2.17 Staging and the problem existed.
To inform you, I've set up that prefix ages ago, there have been many Wine versions between the initial bug report and my latest test. I can't be sure if the prefix is as clean as I've may stated before. Some configuration may have been messed up, for example.
That's why I created two other Photostop prefixes, 100% certainly clean this time. 32-bit one and 64-bit one. Wine 2.17 Staging. I had not described problem anymore.
In summary:
A) One old Photoshop prefix + Wine 2.17 Staging = problem existed
B) Two new (clean) Photoshop prefixes + Wine 2.17 Staging = problem didn't exist
So the only difference between A) and B) is the prefix I used, not Wine version.
And that lead to my conclusion that this bug report is invalid, it was not caused by the Wine version.
If you feel otherwise, you can reopen the bug issue. However, in my opinion, it's still invalid.

--- Comment #8 from Fincer fincer89@hotmail.com --- Well well,
actually, you may be right. I don't know anymore. The bug is seem to be caused by custom Wine theme styles (in winecfg).
Right after I wrote the previous message, I tried a custom Wine theme.
With default (No Theme) theme there is no such issue with GUI texts. With a custom theme (in my case VistaPerfection X4) the GUI is broken.
The GUI got broken immediately after theme change, even with otherwise a clean prefix. Once I restored default (No Theme) theme, GUI was working again.
Due to this, I reopen the issue. Sorry for confusion.

--- Comment #10 from Ken Sharp imwellcushtymelike@gmail.com --- Confirmed above but this is a mess.
1. Does this bug occur in Wine 5.6 or later?
2. Does this bug occur in Wine Staging?
3. Does native gdiplus really cause the problem?
A lot of things have changed in Wine since this was opened, and there's nothing in the AppDB that says a native gdiplus is needed. Is that the case now?

--- Comment #11 from Josesk Volpe joseskvolpe@gmail.com --- ¿Is the custom theme a .msstyles theme you apply in winecfg?
If so, then i guess it's related to another bug i've identified in other applications under Wine 6.16. Because this bug was identified in Wine 1.9.23, then it's a very old bug It seems Wine loses compatibility to some programs if a custom msstyles theme is applied, it's not only Photoshop https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51916
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42034
--- Comment #12 from Josesk Volpe joseskvolpe@gmail.com --- It is mostly a major bug in truth, because some applications ever faces crashes or hang up if a custom theme is applied
