I think the optimal solution would be to read Xinerama information (XineramaQueryScreens) and give that back from various functions.
There is at least one game that supports a dualhead setup natively, that being Supreme Commander. It can be sort of worked around with using a dualhead resolution and split screen, but that makes all UI elements that are normally centered on the primary screen appear in between the screens.
