Summary: wine client error 9 Product: Wine Version: 1.1.29 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: mikahbot@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=24683) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=24683) wine client error 9
This has happened to me a few times, which caused me to downgrade to wine version 1.1.29 in hopes that since it was the most stable version, that it won't happen. The problem is such that sometimes I get a clothing patch error in World of Warcraft, such as robenorthrend read error, or this time, can't read Kalimdor_33_21.adt
I've attached the whole report I got from running WoW via konsole. This is preventing me from playing my characters online. You guys know of any solutions? No matter what version I go to, I get some kind of a read error.
Just in case, I'm using: openSuSE 11.1 kde 4.3.1 64 bit system, wine version 1.1.29

What exactly is the problem do you have? How to reproduce it?

Attach complete terminal output as a plain text file. Upgrade Wine to wine-1.1.32. And retest. Your explanation is confusing about what version did or didn't crash.
What exactly is the problem do you have? How to reproduce it?
Not critical http://bugs.winehq.org/page.cgi?id=fields.html#bug_severity
The problem appeared in both 1.1.29 and 1.1.32. Firstly I had a northrendrobe error, then suddenly I got a Kalimdor location error. Basically, WoW would crash because it could read some kind of a texture, and I couldn't log in. It happened to two of my characters, rendering any play impossible. WoW itself ran, but could not log in successfully into my charas.
Someone sent me a message about running a repair tool, which said that it fixed it. I will try it and post the result shortly.

--- Comment #3 from mikahbot@gmail.com 2009-11-12 00:05:32 --- The repair tool repaired the bugs, however, there is a new problem now. It launches the main screen fine, but when it gets to the download part [to redownload the patch since i reset everything] it goes through the "writing textures to patch.mpq" and then errors out. The little window that pops up has nothing inside, but two buttons that say repair or ok. Pressing okay shuts it down, and pressing repair puts me through the same process.
What can I do: is the last resort reinstalling and hope that it works?

As suggested by one other person, I was to run a WoW repair tool from the Repair.exe . However, that caused even more problems. It did find the errors and successfully repaired them, however, I ran into another problem. It tried to use a Blizzard updater to get the new updates [since I reset everything], however it halted in the middle and only gave me two options : "Repair" and "Okay." Pressing "okay" made the client exit out, and "repair" just made me go through the whole entire process again and again. It never ended.
Luckily, I backed up and tarred my .wine folder and moved the copy elsewhere way before this happened. What I did was remove the WoW folder, moved the old .wine to .wine-old and extracted the tarball. Then moved .wine back into my home directory. That seems to have worked, because all my settings are back and I can once again run WoW. That is probably only a temporary fix, so I will see if I can reproduce the bug.

Makes no sense. Can my wine directory really be that bad even though I have a fresh install?

The following attachement is the log I copied over from the Wine error. Not via console, but the error box it gave me when i failed to read.
The error said: Error # 134 0x85700086 Fatal Condition Failed to read World\Maps\Kalimdor\Kalimdor_31_20.adt.
I thought I fixed it when I installed wine-doors, but it just errored out today.

Probably duplicate of the bug 20643.
NO, it is not a duplicate of bug 20643. If you read my entire report, you will see that it is not.
I have no problems starting WoW and I certainly have no problems with permissions. My issue is wine error-ing out when it's IN THE GAME, not before it. There are map location error reads, which used to be clothing rendering problem beforehand.

--- Comment #11 from mikahbot@gmail.com 2010-03-14 00:01:44 --- I was able to fix the issue thanks to a person named Brian on the opensuse forums. What I did was replace my config.wtf file [after backing it up] with his, and just redoing all of my settings. I still get read errors sometimes, for skins, or land texture errors, but it seems to resolve itself overnight after a shut down. I am still not sure what exactly causes it, but replacing the .wtf file actually brought me from getting an error and getting it fixed from getting an error and NOTHING working. I don't know what else to think, but at least I can play WoW.
This bug will now be marked as resolved.

Got a new error -_-;; This was the output:
wine /home/luuka/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/World\ of\ Warcraft/Wow.exe -opengl ALSA lib pcm_asym.c:106:(_snd_pcm_asym_open) capture slave is not defined
Makes no sense. Can my wine directory really be that bad even though I have a fresh install?
ALSA lib pcm_asym.c:106:(_snd_pcm_asym_open) capture slave is not defined
This mean capture device is not defined in your .asoundrc
and you only define playback device for the asym plugin of your ALSA "default" device

These are game bugs. This issue is in no way related to wine, you should reinstall the game or run Repair.exe as something went haywire when you patched at some point.
Invalid.

Sorry, my mistake...
I have Fedora 13. AMD 2200 dual core processor with 4 gigs of ram. I also have a Nvidia 7950GT video card with 512MB RAM. I just Upgraded to 1.3.5 and installed through YUM.

--- Comment #18 from Ian Savoy ian@thesavoys.net 2010-11-29 03:50:55 CST --- So, I've had very similar errors with WoW as well. I'll say in advance that there's been a lot of abuse done to my wow installation. I've had a few patches were i had to do funky things to get the updater to go past certain steps. That being said, I think that this issue is neither a wine issue, nor necessarily a WoW issue. The root cause of all the problems i've had seem to stem from the updater or the game crashing once.
To be more direct, the issue that mikahbot is experiencing is probably due to a corrupt installation. It is my belief that WoW does not have a good mechanism for handling game and updater crashes. blizz's resolve is almost always "delete Cache, WTF, and Interface. If that doesn't work run the repair tool, if that doesn't work, reinstall."
I haven't done a full digi download for 4.x, but in past releases, the updater was extremely flaky. The best workaround (imho) was to install the game in a windows VM, reset the file permissions on the game's directory, tar it up, and copy it to the linux host. Create my wine environment, copy the tarball to the .wine environment, as well as a hefty collection of patches to go from 3.0.2, to 3.3.5, and manually patch until the 4.x downloader can "do its thing." This will lay down a nice foundation to be patched and abused by blizzard. Since 3.3.something (3.3.3, iirc), you can't copy LichKing.MPQ, unless you reset the NTFS file permissions.
In 4.0, I've had two specific issues. One is WoW consuming too much memory, the other is mikahbot's. As far as the memory consumption, I've found the best thing to do is just exit the game, make sure that there are no lingering WoW/Wine or any other Windows-related processes running, if there are kill them, and restart the game. This happens after long periods of playing...5-6 hours. I think of it as blizz's way of telling me it's time to go AFK.
With Mikahbot's issue, I've found that 2 things ensure it works when i run my startup script. The latter is, of course, rebooting the machine. I'm not sure what this fixes necessarily; my first instinct was file locks, but that's not it. Whatever it is, it's a mechanism of the OS, and/or ext4. Before rebooting, run this snippet:
find $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/Program\ Files/World\ of\ Warcraft -iname "*.lock"|xargs rm
It will ensure that the lock files, which blizz fails to cleanup when the game crashes, do not prevent the game from starting up after your reboot.
I'm not saying that you're not seriously f***ing your install everytime the game crashes and you do this. However, it does keep it going a bit longer, until you have the time to reinstall.
