Bug #: 32873 Summary: Wine unable to install Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: blocker Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: d3553@hotmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Wine is unfortunately almost impossible to use. I first installed wine 1.2.2 from the repository. Then tried to use it to install MSOffice2003. Didn't work. Then I uninstalled that wine version and tried installing a newer one. Impossible. there is a link on your site to wine 1.4. When using the link to install wine, I get a cryptic message that it is "virtual". When using the link to 1.5, I get a message that it is not found.
I've now tried to locate it somewhere else on your site. Lot's of referrals, nothing useful; going in circles or to dead ends.
2 things would improve things a lot: 1: clearly state what version(s) can be used. 2: make those versions available and installable.

--- Comment #1 from d3553@hotmail.com 2013-02-01 15:28:47 CST --- update: installing wine 1.3 from the repository leads to wine 1.4 being installed... Not what one would expect, but in this case no complaint. Except of course that it still can't properly install MSOffice2003 and that it doesn't even bother to say why.

--- Comment #2 from d3553@hotmail.com 2013-02-01 16:57:55 CST --- I'll log a separate bug for the MSOffice 2003 install failure.

That's a really old wine version, there's been a new stable release since then, and many development releases. Try in 1.5.23.

Those are packaging problems, report them to your distribution.

I don't know what you mean by "report them to your distribution"; I thought that's what I just did by logging the bug.
But more importantly: where can I find Wine 1.5.23?

No, I mean report it to Fedora/Ubuntu/Debian/etc., whichever distribution you're using.
But more importantly: where can I find Wine 1.5.23?
