Summary: Oxford English Dictionary - bad fonts Product: Wine Version: 1.0.1 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: mrx@riseup.net
Hello friends,
I've got a little problem with my OED 2nd Edition version 1.14. Download from http://www.oup.co.uk/academic/cdromsupport/oed2v1/
It still runs, but for some reason which I can't understand, it's not displaying some special characters anymore, specially greek characters and the phonetic characters. I'm using the stable version (wine-1.0.1-174-gc4039bd), but the problem is even worse with the latest development versions.
The most strange to me is that it used to show theses characters perfectly well, and now it stop displaying them.
I couldn't find anything similar here at bugzilla. Does anyone know how I could try to solve this? Thank you very much! Zac

--- Comment #3 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2010-04-20 21:13:01 --- "latest development versions" can mean pretty much anything deeding on when it's said and by whom. The exact version always makes it nice and clear. Also opening bugs against wine-1.0.1 is 100% useless.

--- Comment #4 from Juan Lang juan_lang@yahoo.com 2010-04-21 10:55:02 --- Point taken. Zac, could you please specify which "latest development version" you've testing with? Would you have time for another regression test?

--- Comment #5 from Zac mrx@riseup.net 2010-04-22 13:03:00 --- Hello... Well, here we go again to the same old discussion.
Dear Mr. Margolen: Although I agree that "the exact version always makes it nice and clear", I also think it doestn't take a lot of effort to take it literally and understand that I mean just that: the latest versions at the date of my post. Anyway, I apologize. Yes, I've tested wine-1.1.43, and some of the immediately previous ones. None of them were any better. If I opened a bug for wine-1.0.1 it's just because it is the one single version which gives me the best performance with this particular software. I'm really sorry to make you spend your precious time reading useless stuff while you're so busy at work. I didn't mean to disturb you. On the other hand, I think one could say the same about your comments. Since the very first time I opened a bug here, your comments have been 100% useless, and never helped in anything. All you did was to criticize what I had written, just to say it was impossible to do anything about it. Well, if you're so unwilling to help, why to say anything at all? I'm sorry for being so (terribly!) unclear. But next time, why don't you try to read people's posts a bit more carefully and willingly, with a bit more patience, or else just ignore them. It's no use being rude at people. Sorry, I'm human. My mistake.
Juan: I'm really sorry for the above. I can only thank you for all your help. Yes, I could do another regression test, if necessary.
But the strangest thing to me is: those fonts were fine with the stable version, until the moment when I did that regression test. I might have done something wrong here (I actually did, I remember running 'make install', which I shouldn't). If you think that could be the reason for the problem, what could I do to get it fixed? I've already removed and reinstalled wine 1.0.1, but this new problem persists and I can't get rid of it.
I'm doing something strange that could also be a cause for the problem. I'm running two versions: the one I compiled for the Houaiss Dictionary, and the stable (1.0.1), because I couldn't install the OED in the compiled one, and it runs fine with the stable one. Do you think this might be causing the problem?
Besides the bad fonts, I cannot close the software the usual way. When you try to close it, it hangs on and on and you always have to kill the process. This also didn't use to happen before I did that regression test.
So... It seems I corrupted my regular wine installation when I ran 'make install' while doing the regression test. But I don't know how to fix this. When I remove wine and reinstall it, I think I'm not really getting a really fresh and clean wine, and the problem persists...
Please, I know I might be doing something silly, but, could you give me a hand with it?
Thank you very much for your time. Zac

--- Comment #6 from Juan Lang juan_lang@yahoo.com 2010-04-22 13:30:23 --- Hi Zac, please don't take Vitaliy's comments personally. We get a lot of bug reports here, and the usual questions are, 1. What version did you test? and 2., did you test the latest version? His response is the same response we usually give here. (And he really is helpful, even if a little brusque sometimes.)
With regard to the problems persisting even after reinstalling: well, one of two things is likely to happen, as far as I can see: 1. You're using a wineprefix which was somehow corrupted. Removing it should fix that, so since you say you've done that, it's not likely to be the issue. 2. You've installed some version of Wine system-wide, and are using it when you intend to be using something else. 'make uninstall' in whichever tree you used when you ran 'make install' should do the trick. If you've removed the source for the tree, no matter, just download the source for that tree again, and run make uninstall in it.
With regard to whether installing with one version and running with another is a problem, no, generally not. Though since there are two applications you're running, and they may run better on different versions of Wine, you may find it useful to install them in separate wineprefixes. You can create a shell script that sets WINEPREFIX appropriately for each one.
Hope that helps.

Hi Juan... I'm really sorry about what I did. I shoudn't have taken it personally really. I know you guys are overloaded with the same kind of questions all the time and that sometimes people are not clear about the basic things like which version they are using. But I just think there are many possible ways you can say things when you disagree about something or when you're not satisfied with something, and I think was not getting the best of them. I was tired of receiving these 'brusque' answers all the time, and always from the same person. Anyway, I'm sorry I wrote that, and I apologize.
I'll try to work with the new information you provided me, and see what I can do.
Thanks a lot! Z.

Remove wine-1.0.1 completely from your system. Or run compiled Wine directory from compile directory (do not install it).
Also use a new wineprefix.

Hi Vitaliy, Thanks for your help. By the way, I apologize for what I wrote above. I didn't mean it.
Well, when I try to install the OED from the compile directory I get an error message (please, see attachment). I don't know how to proceed. I'm sorry.
Thanks, Z.

Could not load Mozilla. HTML rendering will be disabled.
You have to fix this one. All configurations without wine_gecko are not supported. See http://wiki.winehq.org/Gecko for details on how to make it available to Wine.
wine: configuration in '/home/zac/.wine' has been updated.
Please use new wineprefix (either rename ~/.wine directory or 'export WINEPREFIX=~/.newprefix')
winevdm: unable to exec 'E:\Setup\SETUP.EXE': DOS support unavailable
The CD could be corrupt or improperly mastered (with broken information). I doubt that file really is DOS program. Try mounting CD with disabled extensions support. Also make sure it's mounted without "noexec" option.

Vitaliy, I thank you very much for your help once more. Sorry for the delay... I'll see what I can do with the information you provided me and report the results. Thanks a million. Zac.

Ok, here I am again. Now, I'm running OED with wine 1.2-rc3. It's running fine, the fonts look very good, much better than before. However, the problem with special characters (greek and phonetic alphabet) persists. Also, when you try to close the software, it gets stuck and crashes, and you have to terminate it. Same old stuff. How could I help you guys solve this thing? Thank you very much in advance. Zac.
