I just get open threads by this game in Windows 8.1 via Process Explorer.
There are only three open files : dsound.dll / dinput8.dll / ntdll.dll
And crush of the game in the beginning probably of DINPUT8.DLL...

Have you tried any of the DirectX components using Winetricks?
Ken Sharp, this bug related to http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35478 After installing dsdmo.dll game starts. And crashes only after first videoscene (natibe quartz.dll doesn't help in that time).

--- Comment #13 from Matheus matheus.venturini@acad.ufsm.br --- I completed the GOG version of the game with Wine 7.0 and this issue did not happen to me (it did crash once for seemingly random reasons, it had nothing to do with the door cutscene as described). I also tested the demo of the game with 7.17 and it did not crash. The demo can be downloaded from this link: https://archive.org/details/SilentHill4_201405 I would add it to the URL field in the bug report, but since I didn't create it I apparently am not able to.
How to reproduce:
1. Download and install the demo 2. WASD + mouse to navigate around, leave the bedroom and go to the living room 3. In the wall next to the couch there's what appears to be a face, walk up to it and interact to make the player characters comment on it 4. Walk over to the front door of the apartment, a cutscene will play 5. The player character will interact with the phone by his bedside and a cutscene will play, leave the bedroom and go to the front door again, game should crash at this point according to the description of the bug (again, this did not happen to me, neither in the demo nor in the GOG version)

--- Comment #14 from Alberto Salvia Novella es20490446e@gmail.com --- Strange ????
I will investigate further.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34708
--- Comment #15 from Alberto Salvia Novella es20490446e@gmail.com --- I confirm it works for me with that particular version of the game.
I will bisect what is the difference.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34708
--- Comment #16 from Matheus matheus.venturini@acad.ufsm.br --- I have to agree, that's strange... I know that the GOG version was patched by the developers to better work with modern systems, but the demo is based on the original "1.0" disc release so it should have the same flaws I believe. I don't have the disc version so I can't test if that version crashes.

--- Comment #17 from Alberto Salvia Novella es20490446e@gmail.com --- The errors I get when the game crashes are: https://pastebin.com/dYaS2MVX
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34708
--- Comment #18 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr --- At first, you should fix your setup.
mpeg_audio_codec_create GStreamer doesn't support MPEG-1 audio decoding, please install appropriate plugins.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34708
--- Comment #19 from Alberto Salvia Novella es20490446e@gmail.com --- Installing: lib32-gst-plugins-base-libs
Makes the game to continue.
Nevertheless, after exiting it, I still get some errors: https://pastebin.com/z8v9NMFf
I will try installing all the optional dependencies of my Wine package.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34708
--- Comment #20 from Alberto Salvia Novella es20490446e@gmail.com --- Installing some extra dependencies fixes the problem:
lib32-libgudev lib32-gst-plugins-base lib32-libavc1394
But looking at a game-play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADkPTbGzJBA
I noticed that low res videos are missing, with only "fixme" error messages in the log: https://pastebin.com/if6Q5LBA
