While running Baldur's Gate, I receive the following notice repeatedly:

fixme:ddraw:DIB_DirectDrawSurface_Blt  Unsupported flags: DDBLT_DDFX

Based on discussions on wine-devel, it looks like this may be responsible for the graphical 'garbage' encountered allong the edges
