Bug ID: 35232 Summary: Quicken 2011 Deluxe crash shortly after startup (ieframe, rpc ?) Product: Wine Version: 1.7.8 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: info@skierpage.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 46994 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=46994 console output with WINEDEBUG=warn+rpc,warn+mshtml,warn+ieframe
Quicken 2011 Deluxe installs really cleanly on wine 1.7.8 in Kubuntu 13.10 without any of the tricks and hacks from years ago listed on its page. Nice job! * I followed http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu to install wine1.7, which installed other packages including wine-mono0.0.8. * I ran winecfg but didn't change anything; this created a new ~/.wine and silently installed a mono runtime in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/mono/mono-2.0 * I then ran `wine /media/skierpage/Quicken\ 2011/install.exe` to install from CD-ROM. "The wizard has successfully installed Quicken 2011"
\o/ ! But when I run Quicken, shortly after opening my .QDF file or starting a new account, it crashes. The Quicken window disappears. Judging from the output (which I'll attach), Quicken might be trying to talk to an Internet Explorer frame: warn:ieframe:BindStatusCallback_QueryInterface (0x5199a08)->({6d5140c1-7436-11ce-8034-00aa006009fa} 0x5f828c) warn:rpc:rpcrt4_conn_open_pipe connection failed, error=e7 err:rpc:RpcRaiseException handler continued execution
I'll keep this ~/.wine around in case there's anything else I can do to help debug. I'll retry installing in a new ~/.wine with all those old hacks.

--- Comment #1 from skierpage info@skierpage.com --- A workaround is to install ie6. In a fresh .wine export WINEARCH=win32 winetricks ie6 then run the Quicken installer. With this, Quicken's main window appears. (And I get a different crash.)
It seems some subset of all the hacks and workarounds on http://blog.jdpfu.com/2010/11/29/solved-quicken-2011-working-on-linux is still required with latest Wine, and maybe new ones.
I created http://wiki.winehq.org/Quicken to consolidate Quicken problems.

--- Comment #2 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
(not directly targeting your additions)
The problem with blog entries and wiki: they have the tendency to bit-rot. Many recipes are outdated, targeting old Wine versions or are plain wrong, confusing users and doing more harm than good in the end.

I applaud you efforts, but that's exactly what Wine appdb (http://appdb.winehq.org/) is for. Imagine if everyone creates wiki entries for his favourite apps/games ... it would turn quite fast into a mess.
If you are unhappy with the Quicken app entry -> contact the maintainer. If the maintainer is unresponsive/unwilling, apply for maintainership (or even super-maintainer). There should be only a single place for this kind of information (easier to keep up-to-date).

--- Comment #3 from skierpage info@skierpage.com --- (In reply to comment #2)
There should be only a single place for this kind of information (easier to keep up-to-date).
Indeed, and since Quicken is a family of products that share a lot of code and have similar bugs, the structuring of appdb does not provide that single place. Also, I can't seem to update my test result with new information.
People are already picking and choosing hacks to make Quicken {Deluxe|Premier|Home & Business} 201[0-4] work, most starting from a 4-year old blog post for wine-1.2. It's better for people to reference an update-able page despite the downsides. Apparently AustinEnglish agrees with you, he deleted my good-faith attempt to help.
Thanks for your work on Wine, it's an amazing achievement.

--- Comment #4 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for over a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.37 or newer) wine? If so, please attach the terminal output in 1.7.37 (see http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log).
