Summary: CounterStrike Source: Cannot perform microphone test (or use mic) Product: Wine Version: 1.1.27 Platform: PC URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbB6RqUpRXw OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: winehq.org@eternaldusk.com
In CounterStrike: Source, clicking the "Test Microphone" option from the Voice tab does nothing. The button doesn't even change to "Stop Microphone Test".

However, with the very same installation (prefix) of Wine, the microphone works fine in other Source games, such as HalfLife2 Deathmatch:

Note how CSS also always starts with the mic boost off and the volume set all the way to the bottom.
I have tested this with Wine 1.1.27, 1.1.26, 1.0.1, and get the same results with all versions.
I get the same results when Wine is configured to use ALSA or OSS. I do not have PulseAudio installed on the test system.
System Info: Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 (alpha, fully patched 8/7/09) Audio: HDA nVidia (snd_hda_intel)

--- Comment #1 from MetalMonkey litd_2010@hotmail.com 2009-09-12 08:39:32 --- CLOSE THIS BUG. Microphone works with ingame. It is a little fuzzy, but it works. Make sure you have your volume "capture" or "capture2" clicked on and not muted in your Volume control. You can NOT test your microphone in Steam though. You CAN in Counter-Strike: Source. I play it everyday. I talk to everyone just fine with some static though. Note: Make sure you killall pulseasudio on startup with Ubuntu. This is a must, even if you THINK you have deleted it.

You DO NOT KNOW what you're talking about. (See how shouting in caps comes across?)
If you looked at the videos, I proved that it does not work for me in CSS, though it works in HL2. You apparently didn't read my entire message.
Unlike you, I *CAN* test my microphone in Steam (and HL2). You appear to have a problem opposite of the one I'm reporting.
This is obviously *NOT* a pulseaudio bug. PA, were it installed, would not prevent the microphone button from even sticking down (as seen in the video) in one game and not in another.
Just because things are working for you (as they do on my other test machine) doesn't mean a bug report is invalid.

--- Comment #3 from MetalMonkey litd_2010@hotmail.com 2009-09-14 09:50:25 --- I don't have the problem anymore. I did. I fixed it. It wasn't a PA problem, I ended up miss reading things and had to many windows open. I did completely get rid of PA though and I still had some dropping/sound issues. Then I did the killpa start up program and everything worked ok. I only know that when I got rid of pa that way, my mic started to work. I run ubuntu, and no matter what you do that crappy Pulse Audio still has some crap in it in places.
Anyways I got linked on this bug from another area somewhere doing things quickly and tire.I am sorry I didn't watch the video first time around. People were stating their Mic doesn't work at all. I was simply saying that it does work. I have helped install many CSS players on ubuntu/wine and NONE of them have a problem other than the main ones.Only thing that is "bugged" I guess is that a few of us when speaking on the mic are a little fuzzy. Sometimes sounds like complete crap.
All in all I'm not sure that this problem is a Wine bug. Bug from something else most likely.
Sorry Evil, totally my fault. My tiredness kicked my butt.

--- Comment #4 from Maarten Lankhorst m.b.lankhorst@gmail.com 2009-10-09 01:17:17 --- Can you retest with current git version of wine? There was a deadlock if the microphone was used.

--- Comment #6 from 3vi1 winehq.org@eternaldusk.com 2009-10-10 08:21:17 --- It does _not_ appear to be fixed, though I haven't tried completely re-installing everything. Just upgrading to the latest SVN (and rebooting clean) did not make any difference.
Here in just a few weeks will be the Kubuntu 9.10 RC1 release. I was already planning on re-installing the entire system clean at that time to test the installer, so I'll re-test Wine/CSS again after that. That should be a much more trustworthy gauge of whether the problem still exists, of if I've got some odd audio system config issue that's only affecting this particular game.
