Summary: Static / Scratchy Sound with OSS in Call of Duty Product: Wine Version: 0.9.44. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: wine-directx-dsound AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: brian@brianvuyk.com
With the recent upgrade to 0.9.44, the sound in Call of Duty turned very static, white-noiseish. Sorry I can't describe better.
No other system changes have been made between last known working version (0.9.41, tested yesterday) and bug version (0.9.44, tested today).
Sound driver is OSS. Previously, sound was flawless.

--- Comment #2 from Juan Lang juan_lang@yahoo.com 2007-09-05 16:19:39 --- Please retry with latest git. If it still doesn't work for you, please do a regression test to find the patch that broke it.

--- Comment #3 from Brian Vuyk brian@brianvuyk.com 2007-09-05 16:43:47 --- @Juan:
Unfortunately, I can not invest the time in regression testing it, I merely noticed after an upgrade when attempting to demonstrate to another person how well CoD is handled under Wine.
I have to leave this in the hands of others.
@Alexander:
Similar behavior to that bug. However, ALSA is outputting slightly stuttery sound, whereas ALSA works correctly in the linked bug.

--- Comment #4 from James Hawkins truiken@gmail.com 2007-09-05 18:07:50 --- You should reconsider regression testing:
wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
It doesn't take very long. If you don't have the time to do a regression test, we'll have to mark the bug as abandoned.

--- Comment #5 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-09-05 18:29:15 --- Select OSS sound driver and set "Hardware acceleration" to "Emulation" and try again.

--- Comment #6 from Gerald Folcher geraldf2@free.fr 2007-11-03 04:28:54 --- Hello folks, (regression testing inside !)
This bug seems to correspond to what I am experiencing with the game Grand Prix Legends, since Wine 0.9.43 to the last I just tried 0.9.48. That is, sound is noisy/scratchy in OSS mode, ALSA mode sounds better but there are random ~1 second silences now and then, in either modes selecting "Hardware acceleration" to "Emulation" doesn't help. I don't have this problem with Wine 0.9.42 where the sound is good.
So knowing the problem seems to be between 0.9.42 and 0.9.43, I gave a shot at regression testing following the wiki instructions, with the assumption that the problem is in 'dlls/dsound' (I hope it's ok, it was to avoid having a lot of iterations to do).
So I started the git bisect thing with these commands: git bisect start dlls/dsound git bisect good wine-0.9.42 git bisect bad wine-0.9.43 ...
After 4 testing iterations it seems it finally found the specific commit, it returned this (I scrambled a bit the author's email address just in case...) :
36e90546298e8c096926330dd75f4e373a415171 is first bad commit commit 36e90546298e8c096926330dd75f4e373a415171 Author: Maarten Lankhorst m.b.lankhorst AAAAT g m a i l.com Date: Sun Jul 29 23:47:01 2007 +0200

I hope this helps.
If you want to test with Grand Prix Legends a fully functional demo (only one racing track) known as "GPL 2004 Demo" should be available at these addresses: http://www.3dgamers.com/dlselect/games/grandprixlegends/Thirdparty/gpl_2004_... http://www.gamershell.com/download_6101.shtml Once unzipped, the installer exe should have this md5sum: 9fc0abf47838a3d501386d58cffda39e gpl_2004_demo.exe

--- Comment #7 from Gerald Folcher geraldf2@free.fr 2007-11-07 06:31:26 --- Btw, if there is any doubt, please tell me if you think that I should re-do the regression testing without specifying 'dlls/dsound' (if there is any doubt that it may be elsewhere (?)).

--- Comment #8 from Maarten Lankhorst M.B.Lankhorst@gmail.com 2007-11-07 07:34:12 --- Nah, it should be ok. I will take a look at it later.

--- Comment #9 from Gerald Folcher geraldf2@free.fr 2007-12-21 19:33:49 --- Hello again,
In Grand Prix Legends, starting from Wine 0.9.50 or maybe 0.9.49 (haven't tested this one), sound is now ok (like it was with Wine 0.9.42), but now the sound seems to affects performance very very badly (not only framerate is low but it stutters (there are sort of pause/warps)) when near other cars (ie: in the pit lane). It seems to be related to sound (mixing ?) because after turning sound off with winecfg the game is running smooth again (like 0.9.42 does with sound (btw, I'm still using 0.9.42, I love it), or like 0.9.48 does with scratchy/bad sound). (It seems tho that this performance problem may not be as evident on high performance computers as someone told me he didn't had this problem on his computer (that is much more powerful than mine, at least for the CPU), so it may require a not too recent computer to trigger the problem.)
But as far as Grand Prix Legends and this scratchy sound bug are concerned it seems resolved (I'll probably open a new bug report for the new sound/performance bug, and consider regression testing if I can).
Btw sorry to bring a bad news with the good one, tho maybe it's not related.

--- Comment #10 from Gerald Folcher geraldf2@free.fr 2008-01-04 18:10:39 --- I must correct something wrong I said in my previous post (it may be a bit OT though it seems it could be related):
After more testing I found that the performance related to sound problem I talked about DOES appear in fact in wine 0.9.43, only it got worse in wine 0.9.49. Previously I didn't notice the problem in wine 0.9.43 (and up to .48) but after setting a "max sounds heard" setting in GPLegends's game settings to the maximum (16, I was previously using 6) the problem became evident also in wine 0.9.43, while 0.9.42 handle that with no problem (and with good sound it seems).
It seems in Wine 0.9.49, the performance problem got worse at the same time the sound got better. Again, in Wine 0.9.42 both sound and performance was good. I will do regression testing between 0.9.42 and 0.9.43, but this time looking for the performance problem, though I'm thinking once I'm done it's probably better I post the results in a new bug report about performance affected by sound (mixing?) because it may start to be unrelated.

Marking as fixed - feel free to close.
