When trying to buy or install games in Steam by clicking the Purchase or
Install link, nothing happens and the following messages appear in console:

Which game was it? There were number of reports that purchasing games does
work.

Looks like it tries to open a new window which does not work. And never worked.

Might be duplicate of another bug (can't find one). Confirming.

I tried on several games with the same effect.

A workaround can be opening the game page in browser, finding a steam install
link (like steam://purchase/469) and running 'wine Steam.exe
steam://purchase/469'.

I'm confirming the bug, Steam tries to open new window in the web browser and
nothing happens. This bug not only is related to buying games, but also looking
at sreenshots, going into forums from links on Steam and so on.

Still in 1.1.5, not fixed by removing and reinstalling gecko.

I've bought games in Steam in Wine before, so this was definitely working ages
ago (the last thing I bought was before wine 1.0, though, so I can't remember
when it stopped working - I'm prepared to trawl back to see if it starts
working at some earlier Wine release, though).

Downgrading to various older versions of Wine doesn't fix this problem.

I suspect, from the fact that entries into the AppDB for 1.1.3 before September
which test Buying Games say that it works, and those after say that it is
broken, that this is due to one of the two Steam client updates in early
September, both of which seem to have included changes to Steam's UI.

Steam itself changed. Before it used standard dialogs for buying games. And it
worked. Now it's using something that does not (and never worked) in Wine.

Yes, I can confirm that too.

Comment #2 from Denis Misiurca is working for me.
Could even buy with PayPal, but you have to let Steam opened and copy PayPal's
confirm link and execute it again in terminal (with Steam running) to complete
your purchase.
Execute the same way of the workaround:

- buy
- wine Steam.exe steam://paypal/return
- enjoy

Today (30.10.2008) the way games are purchased on Steam has changed with new
beta client -

. Soon the whole process of buying will be held completely through the web
browser. I haven't tested it yet, but it sounds like it will be much easier for
Wine users. You can give it a try at -

Ok, I've checked it and it's even better - either you start buying thorugh
Steam client and the whole transaction is done within the client, or you start
from a Steam webpage and the whole transaction in in the web browser. So I
believe soon there will be no problems with buying on Steam :-)

The Left4Dead demo seems to have been added to every user's "My Games" list as
a promotional technique.  Can you do the same for any game that isn't already
in your list?  It certainly seems that I can't.

Just adding to what has already been said.

The 'steam://purchase/469' command only works if the game is purchasable.
Meaning this command does NOT work for demos or free files.

If you want to install a free demo use this command:

'steam://install/469'

Bug isn't fixed, GIT as per Dec 22 16:44:31 GMT 2008 still exhibits the exact
same behavior listed in the initial bug report. The person that reported it as
being broken still was on Ubuntu using Wine 1.1.11.

Is anyone sure it was actually fixed in the first place?

I can't install any games in Steam - it simply crashes. It kind of makes the
program useless, seeing as it's a game launcher.  But if you don't have any
games installed it's worthless.

I can confirm this behavior with a fresh install of Wine 1.1.12 on
Gentoo/amd64. I can click on a link to purchase or download a game, and nothing
happens. I get the HLNF_OPENINNEWWINDOW errors in the console.

Steam fails on attempt to install games for me as well.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit. I have tried most of the available WINE
binaries for my distro. Installing games works perfectly in Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit,

I have found that running Steam under low-graphics mode Ubuntu lets you install
games. It seems there is an issue with the interaction between WINE and
proprietary graphics drivers. I am using the latest Nvidia graphics driver. I
will attempt with Ubuntu-packaged driver shortly.

That has nothing to do with this bug. This bug is about the link inside the
embedded IE window not opening the steam:// links properly.

Oh. Well, the title is "Cannot install games in Steam," so naturally, I assumed
that meant "cannot INSTALL games in Steam" and not "cannot BUY games in Steam."

Trying to install a game in Steam does open a new window, but that is NOT an
iexplore window. However, a number of people have been having the issue of "not
being able to INSTALL games in Steam." So either what you are talking about is
unrelated, or this bug is mistitled.

In any event, the people with my issue, the issue that actually does relate to
the title, can solve it by reverting to older graphics drivers.

Scratch that last comment. I suppose my issue belongs on an nVidia bug report,
not this one. I did think that this looked like the problem I and a bunch of
others were having.

For those people who are having issues installing from the game menu, not in

Possible workaround for me is as follows. Installing Firefox or some other
windows web browser in your wine install will allow you to buy or download
games as when you click on the install link, it will allow you to launch steam,
which then takes care of the rest of the process. It's how I was able to buy
and download Mass Effect and other things. Trouble is, flash is a bit screwed
up now under wine.

installation (kernel 2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.i686).  The following wine RPMs

Confirming with 1.1.19.  I could not download FEAR 2 Demo in the Steam client,
or from the Steam Website.  Steam's website uses a steam:// link on the
Download button.

I tried setting up Firefox to open up steam:// links with steam.exe, but it
didn't work.  Maybe I'm just incompetent.

I believe it was pointed out in the faq's for some steam game(HL2?) that
demos/mods/purchased games can be installed using:

wine steam.exe -applaunch 17580

where the applaunch number is the number corresponding to the steam page for
that particular game/app.  Dystopia (HL2 Mod) is located at
http://store.steampowered.com/app/17580/  I successfully installed a few games
this way.

However, for un-purchased games this does not seem to work and instead takes
you to their steam page within the steam store.  You will need to use one of

I believe it was pointed out in the faq's for some steam game(HL2?) that
demos/mods/purchased games can be installed using:

wine steam.exe -applaunch 17580

where the applaunch number is the number corresponding to the steam page for
that particular game/app.  Dystopia (HL2 Mod) is located at
http://store.steampowered.com/app/17580/  I successfully installed a few games
this way.

However, for un-purchased games this does not seem to work and instead takes
you to their steam page within the steam store.  You will need to use one of
the workarounds above to purchase.

With the latest steam (2010 UI update)  I'm able to install a prepurchased game
just fine.  No cmd line parameters needed, all done with just normal steam.  I
haven't tried purchasing a game and installing it though, but this bug is at
least partially fixed either due to wine or steams new UI

I believe this bug is fixed and can be closed.

I just tested and was able to purchase full software and install demos with no
issues.
