Summary: Half-Life 2 doesn't start Product: Wine Version: 0.9.61. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: fhd@ubercode.de
Distribution: Ubuntu 8.04 Kernel: 2.6.24 Wine Package: wine_0.9.61~winehq0~ubuntu~8.04-1_i386.deb Graphics Card: NVidia GeForce 7900 GT Driver: NVidia Linux driver 169.12
Half Life 2 doesn't start using wine version 0.9.61, works fine with 0.9.59.
Steam.exe opens up as expected, I can choose the Game and start it there. The "starting game" message displays just fine. Then, the screen blinks for the fraction of a second and nothing more happens. I am not able to see or move the mouse pointer. When I change the focused window with Alt+Tab, the cursor reappears and everything is normal again. "Half Life 2" shows in the taskbar. Nothing more happens - if I click on the taskbar entry, the cursor disappears again. I can kill the Half Life 2 process and return to a functional Steam.
A logfile with WINEDEBUG=-all is attached, but there are not much entries in it.

Sorry, that was nonsense. WINEDEBUG-all was of course the wrong option. The attached file was created with: WINEDEBUG=warn+all and there IS much in it.

--- Comment #3 from Beat Wolf asraniel@fryx.ch 2008-05-11 10:36:32 --- I can confirm this bug. At least i think it is the same. I tested with wine rc1. When starting half life 2, sometimes the screen stays black and nothing happens, all is see is the intro (the foto of that guy, and then some text about trademarks)
i start half life 2 with the -dxlevel 80 switch and i use a the latest nvidia binary driver.
But, the bug does not happen everytime, sometimes hl2 starts normaly

I ran the regression test between 0.9.60 (yes, it works there as well) and 0.9.61.

--- Comment #7 from Roderick Colenbrander thunderbird2k@gmx.net 2008-05-12 15:03:11 --- You need to get a log of hl2 itself using +d3d,+wgl. You likely need to explicitly set WINEDEBUG in your console as steam launches hl2 in a separate process.

I ran wine after "export WINEDEBUG=+d3d+wgl" this time, I think this should make the half life 2 process log as well. At least the new logfile looks like it to me.
I killed the wine process right after trying to start half life 2, so there shouldn't be any Steam related messages at the end of the file.

Sorry, I didn't know the colon was mandatory.
This output was generated after "export WINEDEBUG=+d3d,+wgl", killed right after the hangup again.

--- Comment #12 from Roderick Colenbrander thunderbird2k@gmx.net 2008-05-14 15:29:07 --- The fbconfig id (GLX pixel format) of the window looks weird. Not sure what causes it either wine's SetPixelFormat (the client window re-creation part) of it fails or the nvidia drivers are doing something strange. There is some other client window problem in Jedi Knight which could be related to this.

--- Comment #13 from Roderick Colenbrander thunderbird2k@gmx.net 2008-05-15 02:27:44 --- Could you try the latest wine git? Alexandre has added some fixes which could help this (they fixed Jedi Knight).

Doesn't work for me. I proceeded like this: git fetch git rebase origin ./configure && make clean && make depend && make
"wine --version" says: wine-1.0-rc1-104-g2470b0b
"git describe" returns the same version.
The behaviour is still the old one, a logfile with +d3d,+wgl is attached.

--- Comment #21 from Felix H. Dahlke fhd@ubercode.de 2008-05-16 10:36:26 --- Yes I'm sure. There are only two wine binaries on my system: the one in /usr/bin is version 0.9.59 from the Ubuntu repositories and Half Life 2 works without problems with it. The other one is the one I compiled myself.
I just double checked and reran Half Life 2 with the very self compiled wine at version 1.0-rc1-104-g2470b0b, Half Life 2 doesn't start.
Are there any additional tests I can run or information I can provide?

--- Comment #22 from Felix H. Dahlke fhd@ubercode.de 2008-06-01 11:31:26 --- I ditched Ubuntu today and installed openSUSE instead. I got the newest wine from the winehq repository and:
IT WORKS.
Distribution: openSUSE 10.3 Kernel: 2.6.12 Nvidia Driver version: 169.12 Wine version: 0.9.64
I have no idea why though. (Same hardware, same nvidia driver version, same wine version...)
Because this apparently only occurs for ME in a very unique hardware-software-combination, I'll regard this case as closed.
