--- Comment #1 from Aaron Franke arnfranke@yahoo.com --- Ideally WineHQ should've put up packages back when Ubuntu 18.04 was in alpha or beta, so that they'd be ready by the time 18.04 released.
I would also suggest adding packages for 18.10 "cosmic" while we're at it.

Desperate to use wine-staging right now. Is there a way to expedite a fix?
I'm current using the artful repo and it seems to work fine on 18.04.

It seems that the Release file for the ppa ins't present. That has to be fixed before the ppa is usable without altering apt's config to downgrade security.

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |gia_@inwind.it
--- Comment #6 from Giacomo Orlandi gia_@inwind.it --- Ubuntu is one of the most popular distros, and 18.04 is an important release as it's an LTS. Therefore I understand this might cause some frustration.
However there is a workaround, the package for 17.10 works perfectly in 18.04, is this really a critical bug?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45085
--- Comment #7 from Aaron Franke arnfranke@yahoo.com --- It's critical because think of the thousands, or tens of thousands, of users who won't know about the work-around and get frustrated that Wine doesn't work.
Also, it shouldn't be too hard to fix. We just need someone at Wine to actually take a look at this issue.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45085
--- Comment #8 from Forest forestcode@ixio.org --- Exacerbating the problem: The source code archives and package build scripts for winehq's ubuntu packages are apparently not published. They are not where they are supposed to be according to the official debian/ubuntu sources.list file (the deb-src entry that gets created when someone follows the official apt-add-repository instructions), they don't seem to be referenced anywhere else obvious, and nobody at the wine project has been forthcoming about how to get them. [1][2][3]
So, winehq.org is distributing binary packages without making their sources available. This makes it impossible for the people using those packages to reproduce them, let alone port them to a newer OS release.
At a quick glance, it looks like this might be more than just a frustration for users, but also an LGPL violation: "4. You may copy and distribute the Library (or a portion or derivative of it, under Section 2) in object code or executable form under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above provided that you accompany it with the complete corresponding machine-readable source code"
If the ubuntu package issue does't deserve importance: critical status, then perhaps a new bug report describing this underlying problem does.
[1] Notice the absence of an answer in this thread: https://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2018-May/127507.html [2] Nobody had an answer for me on the two occasions when I asked on #winehackers irc this week. [3] Nobody responded when I emailed the package maintainers listed at https://wiki.winehq.org/Download
