The Silverlight about window reports the version number as 1.0.0.0, looking at
the about window in Windows it is reported at 2.0.40115.0.  It sounds like the
Silverlight installer running in wine might not be writing the correct version
number (and maybe other important keys) to the registry

Downloaded the install file from here

Created a new .wine directory, installed firefox, then installed Silverlight.

Where does silverlight install to? Tried to install it from your link (had to
download it under wine), but the installer disappears as soon as I click
"Install now"

I don't think silverlight 3 installs in wine currently.  This bug was filed for
silverlight 2, though may apply to silverlight 3 once its installable.  The
download link could be updated to point to an installable version of
silverlight

This is fixed in wine 1.3.20,  added a screenshot showing that the correct
version number is displayed.
