Bug ID: 40568 Summary: AfterEffects CS6: startup fails with error dialog : 'Crash in progress' Product: Wine Version: 1.9.8 Hardware: x86-64 URL: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6 -product-downloads.html OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: robert.munteanu@gmail.com Distribution: SUSE
wine 1.9.8, fresh 64-bit prefix, Windows 7.
winetricks msxml3 applied to work around bug #40548 .
After Effects fails to start and presents an error dialog which reads ( at least what I can read froma screenshot) :
After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was <36> <Dynamic Link> <5> C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclink\CS6\dynamiclinkmanager.exe
The error dialog is hidden behind the splash screen, so it might seem that the application just hung, but by displaying all windows ( 'Windows' key in Gnome ) I saw this error message.

Can you post your terminal output?

--- Comment #3 from fjfrackiewicz@gmail.com --- Also, try running this in a 32-bit prefix since you have this installed C:\Program Files (x86)\ which usually denotes a 32-bit program.

Just did, missed your post while doing it.

While AfterEffects CS6 appears to have 32-bit components, a 64-bit OS is required to run it. See https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs6-32bit.html , where it states that
"With the release of Production Premium CS5 in 2010, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects require a 64-bit Operating System (OS)."

--- Comment #6 from Fincer fincer89@hotmail.com --- Happens with After Effects CC, too (Wine 1.9.21 64-bit). You can rename dynamiclinkmanager.exe but terminal output stays pretty much the same and you can't start the program, anyway.
Is this related to incorrect detection of used GPU/GPU Profile or used by newer Adobe software (versions CS6/CC)? Can't Wine just handle the detection correctly (due to missing code implementations)?
FYI: This program includes GPUSniffer.exe which is used, for example, in Adobe Premiere Pro, too (CS4 and newer). In Premiere, GPUSniffer.exe just crashes if you try to execute it individually.
I suspect that this may be *somehow* similar error which prevents Premiere Pro from starting, too. I'm not sure, though. Premiere Pro gets stuck on loading splash screen like After Effects while loading GPU stuff.
For more information about Premiere Pro-related error, please see: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21017

One of the logs exposed bug 38648. There is a regedit workaround that you could try. Comment 22.

The registry key from that comment did not help with AfterEffects CS6 startup.

You sure?
" REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D] "MaxVersionGl"=dword:00030002
"
Remove the " "-marks Copy paste that into some file. Then do wine regedit filanme. And it imports the file without any output.
Give the output of wine with the hack applied.

See my steps to reproduce below, tried with wine 2.7
$ cat override_gl_ver.reg REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D] "MaxVersionGl"=dword:00030002
$ export WINEPREFIX=/var/users/robert/wines/aftereffects/ $ wine regedit override_gl_ver.reg $ cd $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/Program\ Files/Adobe/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ CS6/Support\ Files $ wine AfterFX.exe

Mostly just for what it's worth, note that you can also just do something like the following:
wine reg add 'HKCU\Software\Wine\Direct3D' /v MaxVersionGL /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00030002 /f
