Summary: Antialiased font is *sometimes* very fuzzy Product: Wine Version: 1.0.0 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: fonts AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: anpaza@mail.ru
For some unknown reason sometimes the antialiased fonts will render very fuzzy. I have installed WINE on a clean Fedora 9 system and launched winecfg for the first time ever; all winecfg dialogs were rendered with a fuzzy font. After some runs the things suddenly changed (???) and it started to look okay, but still from time to time in some programs some dialogs (???) will render with very fuzzy fonts.
I'm attaching the screenshot of regedit. The font settings in winecfg are as follows:
Active window text - DejaVu Sans 9 Menu text - DejaVu Sans 9 Message window text - DejaVu Sans 9 Hint window text - DejaVu Sans 8
but it does not really depend on this setting.
I have never seen this behaviour in previous versions of wine, so it must be something recently introduced. By the way, is there a way to change the settings of the freetype engine within Wine, it does not follow the system-wide font settings of GNOME?

--- Comment #2 from Andrew Zabolotny anpaza@mail.ru 2008-09-08 06:14:12 --- Forgot to say, the dpi in winecfg is set to 105 (my real screen dpi) but changing dpi does not help as well.

--- Comment #3 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-09-17 20:01:48 --- Can you verify an older version of Wine on the same system does not have the fuzzy fonts?
I believe Wine follows the freetype settings?

--- Comment #4 from Andrew Zabolotny anpaza@mail.ru 2008-09-18 06:00:34 --- I have installed wine 0.9.58 and 0.9.56. Both exhibit same problem, the menu bar in regedit (for example) is rendered with fuzzy font.
I did more experiments and it looks like this is closely related to the DejaVu Sans font. If I use "Verdana" or "Tahoma" for menus, it looks okay.
However, the same font is rendered inside the windows just fine. Only on the menu it is rendered fuzzy. Also I'm using DejaVu Sans through my whole system and I'm pretty sure it never renders fuzzy in other programs.
And one more strange thing. It happened to me just once, but the menu bar was rendered sharp in regedit. I don't know what happened, I exited regedit and ran it again and then it was rendered fuzzy again. Then I tried to re-run it many times, and this never happened again.
About freetype settings - indeed, wine will follow the config file settings in /etc/fonts/. Maybe it would make sense to make freetype settings (hinting, antialiasing type) configurable via winecfg. I don't know, maybe this can be changed somewhere in the registry, I haven't found it.

--- Comment #8 from Kamil Neczaj kneczaj@gmail.com 2009-08-01 11:19:45 --- Yes, it's still an issue. It can be noticed using dejavu sans, but not when using Arial, Tahoma, Verdana, Courier and others typical Windows fonts. For me, it's not the matter of anti-aliased fonts, but the corruption of rendering not-anti-aliased ones as shown on my previous screenshot. When such a corrupted font is anti-aliased it becomes very fuzzy as in the Andrew's screenshot. I've got this issue some time ago in openoffice, dejavu font was looking exactly as at both screenshots when anti-aliasing was turned on and off.

I use wine 1.1.32 and it's definitely better, but the antialiasing is completely disabled now, thus the problem is, um, kind of masked. Also note the ugly font rendering on the attached screenshot: I tried the same font in GIMP and it renders fine at any size even if I disable the "hinting" and "antialiasing" checkboxes.
I'm not sure how WINE renders fonts, but it looks GIMP renders same fonts at same sizes with same options much better,
