Summary: Empire Earth v. 1.00 Wine Bugs (Wine 1-0-rc1) Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: fr.fr@vr-web.de
Created an attachment (id=13250) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=13250) everything of the error output ( 2> EElog.txt)
Game has a very low FPS Rate. Even the Menu is very slow, so that the mouse hangs.
The first frames are ok, but then the game gets a little bit brighter and brighter, and the mouse begins to hang. I think there could be a problem with the transparency of the mousecourser. Sorry that I can't give you detailed information about this Problem.
I Attach every thing i found out.
PS: Now i recogniced that the coursor is drawen 2 or more times to the screen. Or the Screen is not refreshed. And the coursor background is not realey transparenct. Every thing in the Game witch needs transparency has problems. When I start a Map i got 60 FPS after 5 sec. i got only 2 FPS. But i don't changed anything.
If you need a Screenshot of the brighter Game feel free to contact me.

--- Comment #4 from Ivanov d137@abv.bg 2008-11-28 11:45:38 --- Well, the game is not lagging, FPS rate is OK. But since EE uses 16 or 32 display depth you should start a new X server to avoid the performance problems => startx /usr/bin/wine EmpireEarth.exe -- :1 -depth 16 the game will start and the performance is great but you really cant (or only icredible slow move the mouse). I tried to accelerate the mouse via the X server so start EE like this => startx /usr/bin/wine EmpireEarth.exe -- :1 -depth 16 -a 150 After that the mouse works at normal speed but still the mouse is difficult to control ( a bit hard to explain the behaviour of the mouse) You can normally start the game but it randomly crashes at loading a mission or at the screen at the end of the mission (I mean sometimes it starts and sometimes not) Here is a demo of the game http://www.download.com/Empire-Earth-demo/3000-7483_4-10229864.html Here is an attachement with WINEDEBUG=+dinput where it fails at loading the mission http://www.2shared.com/file/4363782/e75ece75/EEfail.html and here the same with loading the mission but crashing at the end http://www.2shared.com/file/4363802/24db0340/EEfailend.html hope this help you guys a bit

--- Comment #5 from Thomas fr.fr@vr-web.de 2008-11-28 18:37:42 --- Game ist working great with the startx command. The only Problem I found now is the background Music. But I think this should be fixed with a better implementation of dsound or dmusic. But it works and the background music isn't realy needed.

--- Comment #10 from Fabio Fantoni fantonifabio@tiscali.it 2011-12-01 16:33:25 CST --- I have try on Linux Mint 12 with wine 1.3 and 1.2 also last from ppa, empire earth and expansion, with/wo d3dx9 directmusic, on new x display and not, with/wo nvidia-setting load ecc... There is always some problem, game not starting, sound not working, mouse not work or not good resolution problem after starting game also in new x display... The best way i have found is wine 1.3.33 from ppa, nvidia last from ppa, d3dx9 and directmusic, empire earth with patch 2.0 and expansion, with starting expansion on new x display with depth 16 and -a 150; intro and menu working in fullscreen, sound not and mouse is very hard to control (unplayable), and on strart game show only part of game windows but is on fullscreen, also with game resolution minor then x display. Someone can tell me how to resolve please? Damian and Thomas can you tell me s.o., wine version and settings have?

--- Comment #14 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net 2012-01-20 19:23:28 CST --- Created attachment 38475 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=38475 Empire Earth demo
Tested the demo in 1.3.37. The mouse is controllable at 800x600 resolution (though the game will not allow it to leave the virtual desktop) but becomes increasingly more erratic at higher resolutions.
Note the demo needs native directmusic or will crash on start.

--- Comment #15 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net 2012-02-25 19:45:49 CST --- GOG had a sale on their version, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
What I found is that the demo cannot be used to test for this bug; it does not demonstrate the problem.
In the full GOG version, the mouse does not move at all. It is impossible to start a game. Native dinput does get the mouse moving, but it is uncontrollable, so it's still impossible to start a game.
Tested in 1.4-rc5.

I use the version from GOG.com with Wine 1.5.10 and Arch Linux. The mouse moves so EXTREMELY slowly that at first I thought it wouldn’t move at all.

--- Comment #20 from findus8128@gmail.com 2013-08-23 11:50:15 CDT --- This issue is most probably not Wine’s fault. According to the following thread on the GOG.com forum, there are problems with some mouse drivers under Windows, too:
http://www.gog.com/forum/empire_earth_series/mouse_problems_with_empire_eart...
It seems that Empire Earth does not handle mouse acceleration correctly. This is what you have to do to get your mouse working under Linux:
# Take note of the ID of your mouse:
xinput xinput set-prop <ID of your mouse> 'Device Accel Profile' 6
# If your mouse still moves too slowly:
xinput set-prop <ID of your mouse> 'Device Accel Velocity Scaling' 100
For further information, see:

Happy Gaming!

--- Comment #21 from Paul The Tall paulthetall@gmail.com --- and for Mac users? Still I am from opinion we don't have to hide beyond the fact that in some rare cases it won't work for Windows as well. It should simply be fixed.
Same stuff was mentioned about Metal Gear 2, that it should never work in Wine. Well....I am playing it fine nowadays :)

--- Comment #22 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net --- Still present in 1.7.13.
I tested the workaround mentioned in comment 20 and can confirm that it does solve the problem on my system. I've added the info to the AppDB howto for the GOG version.
Since the problem also exists on Windows, this bug may well be invalid. However, since it does seem to be more common in Wine, I'll leave it to someone with greater technical knowledge to decided whether to close this bug as invalid.

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |johann_frei@yahoo.de
--- Comment #23 from Johann Frei johann_frei@yahoo.de --- This bug should be fixed by this patch: https://source.winehq.org/patches/data/142790
This patch changes the handling of dinput DIPROP_GRANULARITY queries for X and Y axis. Without this patch, it was assumed that the granularity of the Z axis (scroll wheel) is queried, which is usually much higher than the granularity of X/Y axes (granularity = 1).
Thus, this is probably not a bug in Empire Earth but is rather a bug in third party mouse drivers caused by poor driver implementations.
You can work around the old wine behavior by setting the scroll speed to a very low number such that WHEEL_DELTA is close(r) to one.
