All the taxact versions use a custom checkbox that draws a large X for on screen tax forms. These always display as blank. They are drawn correctly on printout. The appdb entry is http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=1265

Still present in TaxAct 2010 Deluxe. Wine 1.3.14 x86_64, Debian testing.

(see bug 32976) With IE8 many error boxes pop up (Internet Explorer Script Error.) and the forms then sometimes do not display. Try ie6 and see if that makes a difference.
TaxAct 2012 says that it requires IE6.

"Web Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater" and "Operating System: Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8."
Since TA supports Win7, which IIRC includes IE8, TA should work correctly with IE8 under Wine *if* Wine is fully supporting every IE8 call.
However, under Wine, using IE6 instead eliminates the script error dialogs after each TA Continue or other click.
IE7 seems to produce the same script errors as IE8, but (for me) with blank dialog boxes, much worse, so was not tested further.
I have tried multiple combinations of Wine (1.5.0 to 1.5.23) and IE (6 to 8) for TaxaAct. So far, the most successful combination has been Wine <= 1.5.19 (no Gecko installed) and IE6.
Wine versions > 1.5.19 give rise to bug 32976.
I'm using Puppy 5.25; results may vary with other distros.
To come to the point, no combination of Wine and IE I've yet tried has resolved this bug.

FYI, TaxACT must have changed something this year since TaxACT 2013 displays the check marks as expected. TaxACT 2012 still does not display the check marks. I did not test any other versions.

I did notice that on boxes that are taller (ie 'filing status'), an x does display, but it is toward the bottom of the box. Perhaps the 'x' is there, but just not where it can be seen on the screen in the smaller boxes. Because original bug report says it prints, it does seem that is the case.
