I don't think regression test is the way to go here.

I would still be interested in this bug being fixed, or at least discovered.

Because the last known working version was around 2000, this would take too
long to do a regression test.

Would WINE from 2000 even compile on a 2007 version of Ubuntu?

Wouldn't the number of shell environment items have increased dramatically in
the linux environment? If this is part of the problem then a regression test
won't help because the base environment is a moving target.

It's not abandoned, we'd just like some more tips on how to focus on what the
problem is here.
