I'm unable to reproduce this... In fact no one else has either...
I've tested with Wine versions 1.8, 1.8.6, 2.4, 2.0.5, 3.0. Using overrides for mfc42.dll & mfc42u.dll (native, builtin or native) makes no difference. The menus are NOT active for any version of Wine I've tested.

--- Comment #22 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
confirming.
I doubt there was a regression at all, this can never have worked unless the app code was different at that time.
--- quote --- Using overrides for mfc42.dll & mfc42u.dll (native,builtin or native) makes no difference. --- quote ---
The app is linked statically against MFC, there is no point in providing 'mfc42.dll'.
Anyway, it seems the app has an interesting way of managing popup/sub-menus. I'm still undecided if it relies on undocumented behaviour or is just sloppy coding/brain damage.

It unconditionally calls 'DestroyMenu()' on each item after creation/insertion of popup and sub-menu items.
When clicking the main menu items, the popup/sub-menus can't be looked up any more because the handles are no longer valid. Trace messages with 'other process menu 0xXXX?' are an indication of this.
Clicking main menu items:

Interestingly, I found a patch on wine-devel mailing list sent some years ago:
https://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2014-May/132644.html
--- quote --- [PATCH 2/3] user32: Add internal reference counting to menu structs Andrew Eikum aeikum at codeweavers.com Fri May 16 10:52:59 CDT 2014 ... This is needed so the client can release the HMENU handle, but we can still reference the menu structure internally. The HMENU is still used all over the place internally, and those have to be fixed to point to the raw struct so things don't fail if the HMENU has been released. --- quote ---
Unfortunately there is no explanation "cover letter" and also no Bugzilla reference which app ought to be fixed by this. It helps here, although the goal of the patch was different. I took the essence of that patch and modified 'user32.DestroyWindow()' further to free the underlying window handle only if the (sub)menu was really destroyed.
It made the app fully functional. All main menu items including sub-menus (popup) can be accessed.

--- Comment #23 from Nikolay Sivov bunglehead@gmail.com --- I've seen this in a number of applications. I resent original patches with minor modifications, see https://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2018-April/125487.html. But this has the same problem original patches had, and I missed initial review on those. Right now I'm working on improving patches to address expressed concerns.

good to know .. I somehow missed this recent resend. Nice coincidence btw ;-)
Do you know which other apps suffer from this? It might be worth to turn this ticket into collector, referencing multiple applications.

Hello folks,
confirming.
I doubt there was a regression at all, this can never have worked unless the app code was different at that time.
For the info i paste forumthread, where someone claims it runs in wine-2.4:
https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=30195
Don`t know if the app got updated, just for the info as i said

--- Comment #26 from old git old.git@net98.eml.cc --- I am the one who claimed Screamer works on Wine 2.4. Alas it is now clear to me that it is only part of the story.
Yes, I downgraded the Wine version on my main PC (Mint 17.3) to 2.4, and the Screamer main menu is still completely unresponsive as described above.
I have a EEE netbook also running Mint 17.3. Dare I swear here? It has Play on Linux installed and the Wine version is 2.4 for the sandbox in which Screamer runs. This installation of Screamer runs just as I observed it running on native Windows, main menu and all. Unfortunately I have yet to find the time to record and compare all the files, dlls etc in both system directories, so cannot advise on the differences if any.

Quoting the WineHQ FAQ: 8.7 I used a third party application (PlayOnLinux, WineBottler, etc.) to install or manage applications in Wine and need help
Consult the support channels for whatever third party application you used. Links to some of these outside applications are provided as a convenience on the Third Party Applications page, but they are not supported here. Before seeking help on the forum/mailing list/IRC or filing bugs, reinstall your Windows application using plain Wine.
Your experience is exactly why PlayOnLinux isn't supported on this site... They use hodge podge of undocumented patches... Also makes it frustrating to support users - who think Wine = POL...

--- Comment #28 from old git old.git@net98.eml.cc --- Yessir!
For the record I am very well aware that Play on Linux and Wine are not equivalent. If only because of the fervour with which each camp slags off the other. You should therefore have noted that I am NOT asking for PoL support. I know that you (Wine official) hate it with a vengeance. You might note that I tried to apologise for bringing it up, because I know how some folks here are VERY precious about the purity of their Wine. You sound as though you are one of them. Well done.
I merely raised my PoL experience to explain the reason for my earlier incorrect observation on another thread that had been quoted here. I also gave here my exact experience in case someone else, who might be aware of the technical differences between Wine and Play on Linux, could (or might be willing to) build on my observations. You sound as though you are not one of them. Well done.
I cannot assist further because, alas, I am a program user not a programmer. I want to get things done, so I am a pragmatist not a purist who will spend hours/days admiring the purity of his code. I have reached the limit of my ability to help you solve your problem, I will go use the program I want to.

Does this still occur in Wine 9.7 or later?
yes. I just tried wine 9.8. can't interact any of the menus with mouse.
