Bug ID: 49170 Summary: WoW (World of Warcraft) shows colored grass and mosaic effects Product: Wine Version: 5.8 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: blue-t@web.de Distribution: ---
Created attachment 67188 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=67188 colored chaos ingame
On the login Screen of my Game i have a colored mosaic effect instead of the background.
Inside the game there is a rainbow colored grass and some parts of the background are a colored mess.
No AntiAliasing is active and i run on medium settings. This doesn't happen with the DX11 Legacy renderer or the dx11 renderer, just dx12 so far.

--- Comment #4 from Olivier F. R. Dierick o.dierick@piezo-forte.be --- Hello,
Did it happen before 5.8 or is it a regression?
Regards.

--- Comment #5 from Ker noa blue-t@web.de --- I haven't tried the dx 12 renderer with lower wine versions before. 5.7 didn't work and so far only the legacy renderer had enough fps for me so I stuck with it

--- Comment #6 from Meghan Pietila pietila.meghan@gmail.com --- Two computers, both on same fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04, fresh install of wine-staging 5.19 from apt - slightly different hardware. Both running d3d11-legacy - one works fine, one had the issue with colored grass, rainbow water, rainbow spell effects.
Non-working machine was somehow missing several 32-bit libraries needed for graphics to work at all, manually installed those but may have missed some. Will hope for ideas here.

--- Comment #7 from Yonseca yonseca@posteo.net --- Hi,
Same problem here. I haven't been able to play until today, with a new freshly installed AMD Pulse Radeon RX 550. I'm running wine-staging 5.20 in Arch Linux. Also tried to execute the game with flags d3d11-legacy and d3d11-legacy with no result.
Winecfg is set to emulate Windows 10, and d3d12 library is set to 'builtin'. Inside the game, however, I can't choose DirectX 12 to be used, and my graphics card is detected as an 'Ati Radeon HD 5600 Series'.

Pic: current DirectX is DirectX 11. DirectX 12 is not listed, and graphics card doesn't match the one I have. Behind the interface, there's the color mosaic effect affecting a loch.

--- Comment #9 from Meghan Pietila pietila.meghan@gmail.com --- Appears to be FIXED on my machine now.
AMD Radeon HD 7800 series card. "DirectX 11" and "DirectX 11 Legacy" both available in WoW system settings dropdown, but historically non-legacy has serious framerate issues so using legacy.
1. Ran "sudo apt-get install --dry-run wine-staging" to check for missing dependencies; I have 5.19 installed and ubuntu wine-staging is now pointing to 5.20 but it seemed worth checking.
Out of the list of dependencies, the following seemed related to errors I was getting (graphics / kerberos), so I manually installed them from commandline:
libglu1:i386 (redirects to libglu1-mesa:i386) libgtk-3-0:i386 (added 18 other dependencies)
libgssapi-krb5-2:i386 (added 4 other crypto and krb dependencies)
On restart, the kerberos errors were no longer displaying in the logs (probably unrelated anyway), and instead of getting rainbow boxy effects, the problematic textures were green and no longer boxy.
2. Noticed in winecfg that it was set to Windows 7. Changed to Windows 10 and restarted - everything now works in d3d11-legacy - water, spells, druid moonkin form with "glyph of stars" applied...

Spoke too soon; on wow restart, graphics problems reappeared. Machine restart did not resolve the problem.

I think I found a workaround. Setting particle density to 'max' and SAAO to 'off' seems to fix the problem.

--- Comment #13 from Meghan Pietila pietila.meghan@gmail.com --- Created attachment 68550 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=68550 Console logs
Had my hopes up, but the graphics settings fix didn't work for me. I believe (see attached logs and failure message near beginning related to vulkan loading) that my problem may be wine trying to use vulkan, but the video card I have is 6 years old and there is no amdgpu driver available for it in ubuntu 20.04. From some forum posts, it sounds like vulkan won't work correctly if the default radeon driver is being used, and I can't find anything about how to disable vulkan. Looks like I need to find some funds for a video card upgrade this fall.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49170
--- Comment #14 from Ker noa blue-t@web.de --- I don't think it is the video card, but rather the upgraded graphic engine in patch 9.0.1. Sure, a RX480 doesn't support raytracing, but as long as windows is fine, i refuse to blame the card.
I get rainbow colors on lowest settings, it is just less obvious because the amount of vegetation is greatly reduced.
Should we do api / shader traces to get this fixed faster?

--- Comment #15 from blc blc+wine@mail.vanade.com --- I see this issue on my Radeon HD 5770, this showed up immediately after the Shadowlands initial patch and still persists today. I have not been upgrading Wine unless things stop working so I don't know the history on the Wine side.
Both the DX11 and DX11 legacy renderer shows this for me.
As far as I can tell it seems something to do with "smoke" areas, excuse my lack of knowledge of 3D rendering. Things that seem to be intentionally blurred to obscure true nature of the object/view are the problem areas:
- tufts of grass - (cloudy?) sky - water, fountains and water bodies - balance druid moon form - shadow priest shadow form - many "ghostly" mounts - Smoky light sources (lanterns, fires) tend to have a rectangular block around it and also has psychedelic colors around it. - Death Knight's death and decay spell tends to white out the whole ground also with rectangular blocks.
Also it appears the longer I stay in the game, some of these issue seem to go away on its own, or at least they seem to abate slightly or at least seem more normal. Not sure exactly what triggers it but it takes quite a bit of time doing (or not doing) something before things sort of rectify itself. However, quitting the game and running it again right away (without restarting the machine or X) instantly goes back to improper behavior.
The workaround listed above does have an effect but does not completely solve the issue.
Seeing this in Wine-staging-5.19.

--- Comment #16 from blc blc+wine@mail.vanade.com --- I'm a bit hesitant to post this as it may warrant its own bug report, but after I finally got WoW to work again on another machine, it likewise seems to have similar issues.
I also see this psychedelic coloring on my Intel HD graphics as well but only in DX11 Legacy renderer. Switching to DX11 mainline, with its associated FPS loss, does not seem to exhibit this. One easy to locate feature in the game that seems to exhibit this issue is looking at the Stormwind water fountain between the bank and the auction house - the water will look brightly colored with hints of glyphs when the issue manifests.
Oddly enough, despite having Windows 7 on this machine, I cannot run WoW in Windows anymore - it hangs on startup, so I can't compare with Windows.
