Summary: Acrobat 8, unable to install Product: Wine Version: 1.1.20 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ToddAndMargo@verizon.net
Created an attachment (id=20740) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=20740) Acrobat Pro 8 install error
Hi All,
When I try to install AcroPro80_efg.exe (Acrobat Professional V8.0 english), after entering the serial number (you can ask for a demo at this point for troubleshooting purposed), I get the pop up that I have attached.
"The wizard was interrupted before Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional could be completely installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete installation another time, please run setup again."
Question: this is a pretty long install. What kind of debug statement should I run for you guys?
Many thanks, -T

yes :'(

--- Comment #6 from Todd Chester ToddAndMargo@verizon.net 2009-10-30 13:51:01 --- Just out of curiosity, I tried running the app after the installer crashed. First, it asked to install "wine Gecko". I said yes and it crashed. The second attempt, gecko installed. Then, Acrobat went into the license agreement and I said yes. Then, it started regular Acrobat and crashed with:
A serious error has been detected and Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot continue. Please reinstall the application and try again.
So, I restarted Acrobat (not the installer) again and it seemed to work. Upon opening a pdf file, I got the above error message again. So, I restarted it a third time and the error message repeated upon opening a pdf file.

Wine's printing system follows the Win9x/Me design, not NT. I believe Detlef is working on transitioning it, but I'm not sure of the progress.

Austin's reply seemed pretty clear: make sure the 32bits development libraries are installed. See FAQ and/or forums (wine or those of your distrib) and/or IRC if you need help.
Also since it's the latest version of wine, you could try with a binary package.

Don't use winetricks if not explicitly told to do so. Using that amount winetricks recipes _is_ a recipe for disaster. You will mess your WINEPREFIX up and encounter all sorts of problems.
Your log shows that your WINEPREFIX is already damaged:
--- snip --- wine: cannot find L"C:\windows\system32\wineboot.exe" err:process:start_wineboot failed to start wineboot, err 2 ... --- snip ---
Again: Use a _clean_ WINEPREFIX for installation.
If you don't know what that means, please seek help in winehq forum.
Again: Bugzilla is not meant for end user support.
For the Adobe Acrobat 7/8 installer there are two bugs: this (spooler) and bug 21987 (dialog can be dismissed). The installer succeeds for Wine-1.4, wine-1.5.0 with spooler workaround (already tested)

--- Comment #26 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net 2012-03-19 19:02:07 CDT --- Hello,
--- quote --- I do not think the "Spooler" is starting, even with the registry work around.
WINEPREFIX=/home/todd/.wine.adobe wine reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler" /v Start /t --- quote ---
Because you corrupted the registry with an incomplete command.
My original snippet was this:
--- snip --- $ wine reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler" /v Start /t REG_DWORD /d 0003 /f --- snip ---
The line length caused Bugzilla to wrap a part of the command line. See the "REG_DWORD /d 0003 /f" part? It belongs to the _same_ command line "wine reg add ..." and should not be left out (no newline in between).
The parameter "/t" specifies type of key which expects the actual type following (in this case "REG_DWORD").
You have to be careful when copy/paste snippets from Bugzilla to terminal. At least some understanding what the command actually does. Incomplete/incorrect/non understand snippets can cause harm. For example wiping out precious default WINEPREFIX (~/.wine) with important user data when being told to start over.
Because of the wrapped/missing part you told the registry utility to create a key "Start" with a default type "string":
--- quote --- from "WINEPREFIX=/home/todd/.wine.adobe wine regedit": REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler] "Start"="3" --- quote ---
The type of "Start" key has to be DWORD otherwise the service control manager ignores this part.
You should have seen the following message that tells something _is_ wrong:
--- snip --- err:service:load_reg_dword Error 1804 while reading value L"Start" err:service:scmdatabase_load_services Error 1804 reading registry key for service L"Spooler" - skipping --- snip ---
How it should look like in regedit/registry export:
"Start"=dword:00000003

A wild guess: perhaps Adobe Acrobat in last stage of document processing, creates a typical "virtual printer" like many other PDF Creators?
