Bug ID: 42331 Summary: The game "Transcendence" crashes on startup. Product: Wine Version: 2.0 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: ferdi@sttc-nlp.nl Distribution: ---
The game Transcendence crashes immediately when started. This is with Wine 2.0 Previous versions and last release candidate did run the game without any problems at all. After downgrading Wine to the default version in the ubuntu 16.10 repository (it says 1.6, but could be 1.8) the game works just fine again.
This is on Ubuntu 16.10 with Linux kernel 4.9.5

--- Comment #2 from fjfrackiewicz@gmail.com --- Seems to work fine in Windows XP mode in Wine 2.0-160-g152b240153.

--- Comment #3 from Ferdi ferdi@sttc-nlp.nl --- It has worked without setting anything in all previous versions of Wine up to the last RC.
If transcendence detects being run on Windows XP it uses GDI mode. This is not recommended because it severely limits the graphics capabilities of the game.
Anything above Windows XP and Transcendences uses DirectX. This enhances the game experience much.

Crash on startup of Transcendence. This is on a new clean install of wine 2.0 without any configuration of Wine. This worked for all previous versions of Wine.

Can you disable winegstreamer somehow?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42331
--- Comment #6 from Ferdi ferdi@sttc-nlp.nl --- I'll try to do that. Let you know as soon as possible. I am using Wine 2.2 at the moment but the problem still occurs there. Fortunately the developer of the game is also very supportive and trying to make things better for use on wine. One thing he found out is that Windows does not mind opening an MCI device that has not been closed after the previous use, but Wine in the long run crashes when you do that. (and it causes problems with playing sounds and/or music from Windows software in Wine).

--- Comment #7 from Ferdi ferdi@sttc-nlp.nl --- Disabling winegstreamer appears to solve the crashes.

--- Comment #9 from Louis Lenders xerox_xerox2000@yahoo.co.uk --- Hi Ferdi, I got exactly the same crash as you; I had just before the crash:
fixme:gstreamer:watch_bus decodebin0: Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in.
The problem here is fixed here by installing gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly:i386 (thanks DarkPlayer for the tip)
(For me (on Ububtu) this also installed the following additional packages: gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly-amr libopencore-amrnb0 libopencore-amrwb0 libsidplay1v5)
Could you try if that helps?

--- Comment #10 from Ferdi ferdi@sttc-nlp.nl --- Unfortunately I cannot install those packages. They conflict with other software i have installed that is absolutely necessary for the professional use of my laptop.(Ex Falso, Quod Libet and mutagen) I have the Ugly set installed by the way, but just not the i386 part.

--- Comment #11 from Gijs Vermeulen gijsvrm@gmail.com --- I can't reproduce this with Wine-3.0-rc5 and Staging 2.20. openSUSE Leap 42.3, 32bit prefix, windows 7.
Comment #9 mentioned it was fixed by installing missing plugins, is this considered a valid bug?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42331
--- Comment #12 from Ferdi ferdi@sttc-nlp.nl --- This bug is no longer relevant.
Both Transcendence and Wine have been updated (multiple times) and the problem no longer exists, this bug can be closed.
Transcendence works perfect with Wine now.
